#1 Re: General discussion » keel leaks » 2019-06-15 02:34:05

Thanks. Nothing moves with boat in the water so I will wait until Fall and try then resting on the cradle and do some smile work. There was just 3 holes in the sole and mid way I had enlarged to more easily handle the electric bilge pump. But I will try reaching forward and see if there is another 1 1/8" up there.

My 71 mark1 has a very slow leak at the middle keel bolt. Am awaiting an Amazon delivery of a 1-1/2" deep socket to try some tightening. Contrary to manual I have, I have only 3 bolts. Two 1-1/2" nuts forward and one 1-1/8" nut to stern. The stern I did have a tool for but could not get any movement on it while in the water. Thought I had seen some discussion on which should be tightened in water and which while in the cradle? Is removing the nut and washer and putting any bedding compound there and reinstalling a folly or possible help? I confess I somewhat ignored the smile this spring but only slight crack in spots while boat weight on keel. Any guidance and advise appreciated.

Does anyone in the Toronto area have a Moyers Marine or similar holding tool to aid in replacing the rear engine seal of the Atomic4. Sale or rent.
Also prop puller for original 2 blade removal.

From my search of the forum, no specific indications of the sizes of bolts for the keel. I have a markI. The forward and aft are less than 1-1/4 but more than 1" and the two middle ones are more than 1-1/4". Already bought these 2 deep sockets. Will go get more today but would like to zero in.
Thanks

Thanks for the input, David. Sounds interesting and I would love to try. However was planning on getting the new prop and tools organized before Spring launch. Last year a leak during launch caused me an extra $500 for extra in and out so would like to get the drive train done first. I have a mark 1 with the protruding rudder. Not sure if this would affect the maneuverability. Anyways will have to decide.

Now that I have read the Black Arts and realize I do not need to be frustrated by a boat that won't backup (straight) or stop reliably, I have decided to spring for the Indigo 3 blade prop. Anyone in the Toronto area have a prop puller I could borrow? Or is there any chance a rubber hammer would be successful on an original 71 installation? Or any chance someone has a prop for sale for some reason?
Thanks

#10 Re: General discussion » shaft seal packing material » 2016-12-21 08:32:37

Thanks for the response. I did find that excellent article you referred to and that is why I was questioning the correct sized fibre. Having referring me to Black Arts I had forgotten about, I now have other concerns on rubber hose, scoring, warping, cutless bearing, replacing my 2 blade fixed prop and many other topics referenced. Lots of time to plan my attack in the Spring.
Thanks to all those who have contributed to the site.

I want to repack my original shaft seal on 71 mark 1. From reading it seems different cord sizes are available and required depending on shaft diameter and type of coupling. It has worked just fine all these years and just run out of tightening adjustment so no present intent on replacing with any dripless type etc. Covered for winter now but would like to dig out old stuff and redo in Spring. Any ideas on type and size of packing material for this old A4 and Toronto area sources.
Thanks

#12 Re: General discussion » fuel pump atomic 4 » 2016-08-12 12:52:45

The plastic hose connector did seem to have an NPT thread that threaded into the pump but I was afraid I would break it if tightened further. A little Teflon tape allowed me to completely stop the one drip and presumably stop any sucking in of air. There is a tooth paste type stuff approved that I will just try smearing a bit on to the threads to make sure.

Rats! You are totally correct that white Teflon tape is no no with gasoline. Get that stuff dissolving and going into pumps and carbs could be disaster. Googling comes up with other stuff and perhaps YELLOW Teflon tape (but I suspect that is Natural Gas tape not gasoline) SO back to the boat with new tube of guck in hand to redo all my connections. Thanks for the warning!

#14 Re: General discussion » fuel pump atomic 4 » 2016-08-12 06:17:00

Thanks for the input. I bought the filter from a chandlery and it was supposed to be the best solution for gas filtration. I would hate to loose the visual but I see the problem. The engine problem is solved in that there was a very tiny air leak before I applied Teflon tape to the inlet pump connection and I guess it was sucking air instead of gas from the tank. So for anyone interested, Amazon sells the Airtex E8251 a very cheap solution compared to Moyer offerings. I am ordering a 2nd so I won't ever have to navigate Bronte harbor in a howling wind and 1 meter waves with reefed jib alone again.

I have a 71 C&C27 mark 1 which had on it an Airtex inline electric fuel pump. It failed and I replaced with an Airtex E8251. Old number E1039 doesn't seem to exist or cross reference. It flows when line to atmosphere but doesn't seem to keep filter sight glass full when connected to carburetor. In reading this may not have been the proper number for a carbureted application. I am baffled by hundreds if different model numbers for each manufacturers pump. Can someone tell me a pump brand and number they have used successfully between gas tank and carburetor that hopefully is available quickly in Toronto area.
Thanks

For those in the Toronto area - I found the chain Tru Country and Garden has or will order in Marvel Mystery Oil. There is one in Schomberg, manager Amanda schombergtcg at bellnet dot ca or 905-939-2911.  $8.49 per 946ml or you can get a case of 6 for 10% discount.  There is also a store in Newmarket.

Should I be using the Marvel Mystery Oil in gas and oil as seems to be advised by Moyer Marine? Should there be any additives?  What about synthetic oil?
If there are fans of Marvel, does anyone know where you can get it in Canada?

#18 Re: General discussion » stiff shifter on atomic 4 » 2015-07-15 03:44:06

Thanks Clare,
I suspected that is what happened but the guy said he did something to the bands which I read is reverse only which worked fine, not this notched mechanism. Anyways I will try a one notch back and see what the result is. One other question, I assume there is oil in there. does this just come from the standard engine oil or is it different transmission oil.  Do I need to add anything here or just make sure the engine is topped properly.
Thanks so much for feedback from experienced users.  This is a brand new engine experience (not new engine) for me.

My newly purchased 27 with atomic 4 turned out to be slipping in forward. Short of time and eager to move from previous owners club back to my home base I hired a yard mechanic to fix. A look at the manual described the notched wheel adjustment but the mechanic did not say he did this adjustment.  No more slipping but very hard to lock the gear shift into forward and dangerously hard to pull or push it back to neutral.  Where should I be looking for whatever needs redoing or adjusting. Back at home base where I can address this.

Thanks Brian,
Very interested in bouncing ideas off someone with markI who has had longer than me. Yes I am the new owner with previous owner having it 17 years and letting it go for several of the last. It has been a couple months of surprises and despair and much money but starting to see the light of day. Realize now I should never have bought a boat on a cradle in Spring where most equipment cannot be tested. Had a $500 survey but missed most problems that couldn't have been detected. Boat stored with mast up for too many years so mast wiring and furler problems will have to wait until this fall to address.  The C&C manual with wiring diagrams is most helpful. Have now replaced all #4 wires for heavy dc and redone most of the low current dc. Based on poor condition of add on panel I need to now address the 120. Battery charger seems to work and alternator seems to work without leakage so assume so far that diodes are okay. Engine was the guys focus and it seems to be up to date with new carb, electronic ignition, electric fuel pump and so far runs like a charm except for some linkage problems after a forced on me mechanic adjusted the slip on the transmission so I could sail the boat home (Oakville/ Bronte ON) New toilet and new fresh water bladder. Turned former v berth water tank into holding (hope that doesn't turn out to be a mistake)
Have the VHF/DSC working and receiving coordinates from the old Standard Horizon chart plotter and the old St2000 Tiller Pilot works like a charm. Lots of balsa core problems that I will have to address. Have replaced the compass and will need to also replace the lcd depth and speed which are hardly legible.
Only been out a couple times actually sailing and pleasantly surprised at the sails that were on it. Finally got a dry day to open up another genny, a spinnaker and a gennaker and again for cruising, think they will be fine.
The hull number on the name plate does not seem to conform to deciphering sequence I have seen on the site.
CC278571N It is a 71 so suppose it could be #85?

I was an active sailor 40+ years ago and actually built from a kit a Viking28 which I raced. Nothing inbetween.

Pleasantly surprised at the beautiful way she sails. I don't plan on racing but do like a boat that performs like one.
