I have found that I need to charge my batteries at least once week (by running the motor) so I figure it's time to buy some new batteries. Presently I have CTC Nautilus deep cycle batteries. Question...what make of batteries do you recommend? as well, should they be identical? The batteries I currently have are 730a & 650 a 'marine crank'. Any advice?

Yes, both batteries, starter and house. I should mention that the boat also came with a Statpower 10hw Truecharge battery charger.

Thanks, what a great thread. One question...my mk V has the battery arrangement of one in the cockpit locker and the other in front of the fuel tank, which one is battery #1 on the selector? I thought I would put a non- deep cycle there for best start up cranking power.

Disconnect one battery completely, put the selector switch on 1, and see if the cabin lights or some other device come on. If they don't, the battery you disconnected is 1.Doug Hunter

If you're already going to replace both batteries, I think it makes sense to buy a cold-cranking starter battery. Cheaper than a good deep cycle, and it's designed to get an engine to turn over with a big blast of amps. The question then is whether you can get by with one deep cycle as your "house."
I replaced the starter this year in Diva and the single deep-cycle house is also up for replacement. In the meantime, I added a third battery bank, two 6-volt deep-cycle Trojans installed in series and dedicated exclusively to the cold-plate refrigeration system. I reasoned that I never want my refrigeration to kill my house battery and take my instruments with it.Doug Hunter

Is there enough sunshine in your area to install a solar trickle charger? Helps keep battery charged when you are not using the boat.
Just disconnect and put it in a safe place when people are on the boat. I learned the hard way that they can be busted by humans who are able to get close to the panel when the vessel is in motion.
