rudder post assembly

The other day I noticed a couple barnacles on the top of the rudder of my Mark 1. As I scraped them off, one of the two rings between the rudder and the hull also came off. It was the upper one and it was quite worn and thin.
At a neighboring boatyard, I saw a similiar set up. He had a hard washer on the bottom of the shaft and a soft washer on the top. They did not seem under pressure as I could rotate them both.
I used the search funtion but could not find any mention of these washers and what their purpose is. That makes me think this is probably a dumb question...do I dare launch without dropping the rudder and replacing this part?

Re: rudder post assembly

If you don't replace the washer, I think the worst that could happen is that the rudder might, very occasionally, rise up and rub against the hull. Since our rudders are much heavier than water (mine is, anyway), that should be a rare event.

I made a new one when I had my rudder off, from 1/8" sheet nylon.

Re: rudder post assembly

Thanks! I was hoping someone would say it could wait until next year!
