Cockpit repair after instrument upgrade

I'm replacing my old Signet knot meter, that required a 5.5" square hole in the cockpit, with new instrumentation that only requires a 2" hole for installation.

Barring adding a new window to the cockpit.....I was wondering what the best way to cover up the original hole would be.  I have no expectations that it will look as good as new and plan to mount the new knot meter in its place, but it is smaller.

First thoughts was to cut a piece of spare lexan into the opening than cut a larger backing plate for the inside and secure it w/ 5200 - I'd like to avoid any new screws but me thinks the new instrument may not sit solidly in this layout......anyone have any good ideas.

Hi Josh,

I wouldn't use 5200.  That's for permanent assemblies, something you'll never want to separate again, like hull to deck joints.  I'd suggest Boatlife caulk, or Sikaflex, or 3M 4200.  How about covering the hole with a piece of teak faced marine plywood, or Starboard?

I put a piece of teck fix by small screws instead of a plexi. Inside i made a locker to hide wires and connections

The picture was taken during the winter to see what it's look like ( the instrument was not perfectly square at this time !! )

Thanks, that looks like a good way to go.  Although I might skip the cabinet for now....did you screw the teak in from the outside and plugged the holes???

Hi Josh,

No i screw it by the inside on the first skin of the wall. then put Sikaflex 291 by inside again around the big hole let by the old instrument to seal it against leaks.

If you prefer, you can put Sikaflex behind the piece of wood and stick it to the wall. Just retain the piece of Teak with masking tape and wait until the sealer came dry.Jean Rivest,

I made Plexiglas plates (had some scrap) for inside and out, cut 2" holes in their centers, painted them with white Krylon, made a donut from a third piece of plexiglas to act as a spacer, and sealed the lot with the sounder display unit's locknut, using 1/16" butyl tape to seal out the weather.
