Boat Weight

Greetings All,

I am currently in the market for a new truck and trying to balance gas mileage with towing capacity.  Can anyone tell me what the weight of a C&C Mk III is?

I have a dual axle trailer that I use for local hauling of the boat for spring crane-in and fall crane-out but am looking at taking Hotel California down to Lake Superior (Thunder Bay - 400 hwy km) next summer and don't know whether it would be more economical just to rent a larger pickup for a couple of days or spec my new truck out to haul the boat and my travel trailer which has a GVRW of 4950 lbs.

Only you can tell what the weight of all your cruising clobber is likely to be. I'd add at least 1000 lb, maybe 2000 just to be on the safe side if you include wine & beer. Anyone else care to 'weigh in' (sorry) with a guess? Step right up and win a kewpie doll!

Of course, if you can put things off until haul-out, you could take the boat to a weigh-scale and get an accurate number. I wouldn't want to get stuck with four or five years of an unnecessarily thirsty truck for the sake of saving a couple of days' rental.

Re: Boat Weight

From my reading and very limited experience, the brochure displacement weight (5500 lbs, I think) is likely less than the crane weight would be today, given added machinery, stores, maybe water in various places.

Re: Boat Weight

Boat 5500, trailer 1000 - 1500, provisions 1000-2000... it is adding up quickly. If you tow your travel trailer frequently it may make sense to have a slightly oversized truck. I bought an oversized truck in the late '80s to pull a boat and regretted it at every fill-up. Do you have a quote from a commercial hauler? The last time I checked it was a surprisingly cheap package down here.

Re: Boat Weight

I did this research a couple years ago, when planning a truck purchase.  For objects that are bouyant; displacement = weight.  I would say the boat weighs all 5500#, add the trailer and cradle, your easily around 7500#.  Just be sure your trailer has working brakes, and has sufficient tounge weight.  Also be advised the 27's are wider than the legal limit in Minnesota so a permit is required, and the height is within a few inches of legal too.

I've used a 3/4 ton Chev diesel to pull our boat around, and it does it with ease.  I also figured it was cheaper to borrow a truck to move the boat.  So I still drive my Jeep.
