Stanchions

Greetings from Hotel California,
Now that the boat is on the hard and I am putting together the list of winter projects, I need some advice on stanchions.  I have the 7/8" SS sticks with the eye on top for the 1/4" upper lifeline and the lower holes for the 1/8" lines.  The stanchions are showing their age with a couple of them bent at the base and I have not been able to find a decent 1/8" lower life line.  So I am contemplating swithching the six stanchions to 1" with a 1/4" upper and 3/16 or 1/4 lower.
Before starting down this road, I would appreciate any input from those that have undertaken a similar conversion.
Interestingly, there is a 1980 Mk III in our harbour that has the 1" stanchions and the owner indicated that they were on the boat when he bought it.
Six months to crane-in...
