Bimini for MK1

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone with a MK 1 has a bimini covering. Would love to see someone's, as we are planning to make one for ours. The problem with the mk 1 is that the boom extends so far back.

                               Thanks, Sue

Don't know where you're based, but if in Canada you should give Genco a call; they have patterns for many boats and may have a solution. Their site is http://www.gencomarine.com. Good luck.

Re: Bimini for MK1

I am in the same boat as you Sue. I am looking for a Bimini for CJ. There was a Bimini on it when I bought it but was not well designed in that there was no sighting window for my mast wind vane, in the cockpit to stand up you had to be shorter than 5' 5", and get on and off you had to crawl towards the bow. I took it off and find it much easier to maneuver but am not looking forward to the FL summer sun. I am trying to contract a local sail maker to do the job of redesigning the bimini. Things I have looked at with the Mk I Hull #100 is raising the boom, shortening the main sail, and moving the traveller. I have looked at the mast and to raise the boom any higher would require some work since it already all the way to the top of its slide area. All of these cost $$$ plus the bimini. The rough estimate for raising the boom, shortening the main sail, and bimini with stainless steel was pretty close to 2K. If anyone has any ideas I am open to suggestions.

Sue, Contact Nathan or Brad at Doyle Sails in Dartmouth N.S. They are on Wright Ave. in Burnside. I bet they can come up with a pretty good design. Brad is probably the best around. Also, this time of year they might have lots of time. Just a thought.

Re: Bimini for MK1

Wind Horse came with a bimini that is standard catalog equipment. It was mounted where it covered the forward portion of the cockpit and the hatch. I changed the stock traveller to a twin tackle method like Serendipity (search 'traveller' or check black arts) and that allowed me to move the whole bimini back. I did have to make a cut for the aft stay and will install a window to see the sail over the winter. If you are a bit handy and have a good sewing machine it is easy to do.

I have one that I took off mariah when I moved her back north. The vertical upright is bent, the fabric is perfect( pacific blue). If you are interested in part or all I would give it away for the shipping.

Re: Bimini for MK1

I was going to make one for Liberty Belle a 1971 MKI but I found a place on Ebay that sold it for less than I could make it. The Quality is very good and they use Sunbrella fabric. I am 6'1" and can stand up under mine. I will admit it took a little work to get it to fit and look good

Do you have an ebay reference and pictures of your handiwork - I'd really like to see it?

Re: Bimini for MK1

I bought a Mk I late last August and while I seemed to spend more time motoring than sailing before the season ended, I did make use of the bimini. The boat has a partly refitted bimini. The forward dodger part was updated a couple years ago by Genco, and has both clear plastic and zip-in screens. I'd talk to Genco.
best of luck
