My wife and I just purchased Hull # 180 built in 1972. I grew up in the Port Credit/Oakville area and remember these boats fondly when new. We found the boat in Port Huron Mich. and intend to sail out of Port Glascow on Lake Erie. It appears to be well taken care of with a recent hull repaint (awlgrip or imron navy blue)I have read much of the info on the site already but now wonder what we bought. One article in evolution says mark 1 (1-167) lower on the same page general specification says mark1 (1-215) Without measuring the mast can someone confirm if I have a late mk1 or an early mk2???

The easiest method is to look at the number of shrouds. The MKII will have lower shrouds while the MKI will have only uppers. So if you have three shrouds on each side deck you have a MKII. Now even this method needs some caution. From the few 27s here in Texas I know of one MKI that has a baby stay which I understand to be unusual. So rigging may vary even within a mark.

To clarify Mike's explanation. All Marks of the 27 have upper and lower shrouds (yes, even the notorious Mark V). However, the Mark 1 had only a single set of lower shrouds, while Marks II, III and IV had dual lowers and a single upper (hence Mike's comment about 3 shrouds per side versus 2).
Welcome to the community. They are wonderful boats!

Mike, I think if you examine the boat with the in-line shrouds and babystay, you'll find that these are an owner modification. The 27 next to me has this setup and although it's been neatly done, it's clearly post-factory. It's also a modification that's not allowed by our Association rules, but since the change doesn't appear to confer a benefit, no one much objects.

David,
I'll take a look. It's Warren's boat, Serendipity. He's been teaching at a local sailing school and has been hard to catch at his boat over the past year.
