Racing experience with Mk III or IV

Am considering purchase of a MK III or IV and plan to club race in PHRF.  I have seen a rating of 172 with spinnaker, and am wondering if she is competitive at that rating.  If anyone has raced this boat, please give me your opinion of whether or not she can be competitive in PHRF .  Email me at RobC222@comcast.net
Also, any tuning, rigging, boat handling, sail trim or boat speed tricks would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Sail on wester Lake Erie.  Winds are usually offshore 8-15 knots and light chop.  Lake is shallow, so when wind pipes up to 20+, wave period is short and face is steep.  July/August sees frequent evenings where the breeze is light and variable at under 10.

you should do well in those conditions.  They are great light air boats, fast upwind and down, and really fast on a reach.  They are Ok in heavy air, but tend to hobby-horse in heavy waves.  Lots of room below for a 27 foot boat.  They sail to their rating in Lake Ontario.

Jim,
Thanks for the info.
Any particular sailmaker have an edge with this boat?  Do most competitors use racing Dacron sails, or more exotic carbon, laminated or tape drive sails?

Find a local sailmaker you like.  If you don't know one ask the club members and shop around.  In Toronto people are buying North & Quantum.
For mains dacron is fine.  For headsails, if you're serious about racing you'll want a laminate / tape drive / string sail.  Save your pennys!

Re: Racing experience with Mk III or IV

Do you know the hull number of your boat and/or the year built ? The rating sounds way off for a Mk 3 or 4 as we know them for Lake Erie[ should be high 180's or low 90's]. Sounds to me like you have a Mk5 as we call them here, but in some areas are referred to as a Mk3 ???

Re: Racing experience with Mk III or IV

I am looking for a true Mk III/IV; traveler in front of tiller, inboard rudder, built between 1973 and 1983.  Can't remember where I saw the 172 rating, probably on a scratch list which may have been a Mk V.
What do you sail and what does it rate with spinnaker?  How does it do on Erie in light and moderate air?

Re: Racing experience with Mk III or IV

PHRF-Lake Erie labels and rates 'em as follows:

C&C 27-1 at 213 vs. PHRF-LO 27-1 at 198
C&C 27-1 TR at 204 vs. PHRF-LO 27-2 at 198
C&C 27-2 at 195 vs. PHRF-LO 27-3 at 186
C&C 27-3 at 180 vs. PHRF-LO 27-5 at 174

Just to confuse things even more, keep in mind PHRF-LO ratings are 2005, and will change (all +6) in 2006.

FYI, any competent sailmaker can make good sails for the C&C 27 (all marks).  There's nothing magical about our boats, and no need to follow the herd to the biggies.  If you've had good experiences with them in the past, great, but if you have some specific ideas of what you'd like (as opposed to what they tell you is needed), prepare to be disappointed...

I've had poor quality and service experiences with both, so have been working with a small independent Toronto-based loft for four years with excellent success in Lake Simcoe's PHRF fleet, specifically against an active, well-prepped fleet of C&C 27-5's with North and Quantum's latest and greatest...

Cheers,

Re: Racing experience with Mk III or IV

I haven't launched our new Mk III yet, but my better half is, what's the best word - (concerned) that the MkIII's won't hold up in the big winds like our previous 24.  Any replies on the seaworthiness in the big stuff that I may console her?  Cheers.

they're built like a tank, don't worry about big winds, just shorten sail and have fun

Under the Technical area of the C&C site you will find info on the relative stability of most old C&C designs.
