Mk V Keel Fairing Template?

My keel was really poorly faired when I bought Risque last year, but I put up with it for the season.  I intend to correct it this spring.  I'm looking at my options right now, but I don't intend to just eyeball the foil.  I want to use an accurate set of templates to properly fair my keel, and I'm looking for options.

One option is through Compukeel, who charge something around US$250 for 3 templates, but they don't indicate which mark they're for.  I'll e-mail them and ask.

As another option though, if anybody could tell me what the foil is that is used (e.g. a NACA number like 64-010) I may be able to have my own templates made up by a friend of mine - I can create the templates using profili, and he could import them to his laser cutter.

As a third option - is there anybody who has templates that they're willing to sell?

If anybody has any thoughts or input about this venture, I'd love to hear it...  I couldn't find a thread regarding this in Forums and yet everybody understands that the keel foil shape is as important as the shape of your sails, so perhaps this is a good opportunity to get the discussion going.

Re: Mk V Keel Fairing Template?

Allan, I own hull 528, When i bought it 2 years ago, the keel had just been redone (after a little incident) and it looks fine but I would like to check it and I would be ready to share the template with you 50/50 if you decide to buy it and depending on the dates you would need it.

Re: Mk V Keel Fairing Template?

On second thought, I was a bit hasty - that is a buy/sell posting, which is permitted. Re-post the address if you like (I don't have access to it).

I would, however, appreciate it if the first poster would take care not to double-post. It can take a minute for our less-than-lightning-fast server to respond. Site housekeeping is not the fun part of the job.

Actually, I didn't re-post - not intentionally anyway.  When I first tried to post the message, several times I was given a message to the effect that the security image that I typed in was incorrect, sending me back to the preview screen.  So I'm guessing that through this cycle of having to resubmit each time I was rejected, the message posted more than once.  Then, when I went back to the forum I saw that the message was posted in duplicate, but by that point I couldn't do anything about it.  Have you run into this problem before?

Re: Mk V Keel Fairing Template?

Duplicate posting hasn't seemed to be an issue lately, and I'm surprised that you didn't have the delete button available to you. Admittedly the CAPTCHA security is a pain; the numbers are so difficult to read accurately that mis-reading is common. It's another example of security that is _almost_ as bad as the problem it's trying to solve. (Which of us would not happily go back to the old days of no-airport-security as long as it was someone else's airliner getting blown up? The thought of those uniformed retards at the airport amusing themselves by inspecting our willies with their new scanners doesn't reassure me one bit.)

But, as usual, I digress... The problem here, as you may have guessed, is spammers. We had a brief infestation that I stopped by requiring manual (done by me on application) registration. We may go back there. In the last month, we've added about 120 new registrants and probably 119 of those are potential sources of spam. Are they waiting for a propitious moment to flood the board with spam or is the security number deterring them from using the new addresses? Don't know. I just don't see the point - this is a relatively low-traffic forum and I usually delete spam within one day. The whole thing seems terminally stupid to me and, as I said, a low-grade pain.

Perhaps it's a pain but I appreciate the added security. And to the under-appreciated admin, thank you for all your hard work keeping the board in tip top shape and trying to stay one step ahead of the issues

Happy new year to all

Re: Mk V Keel Fairing Template?

Allan:
Just saw your post regarding keel templates. I have a set, which I made about 4 years ago. Like yourself I wanted to get the shape of my keel on my Mark V as close to the designed shape as possible. After researching ways to come up with the correct foil shape and a phone call with Rob Ball, the original designer of the boat at C&C, I decided to get a set of the original drawings from South Shore Yachts. From those drawings I was able to loft the shape and make the templates.
The templates have now been used to fair my keel, another Mark V at my home club and a boat in Buffalo NY.
If you are interested the templates are currently available, boxed for shipping and I could send them to you within the next week. All I sk is that you cover the cost of shipping and make a donation of $100.00 to the Still Knot Working competition fund. If you are interested please contact me.

Re: Mk V Keel Fairing Template?

Steve, thank you very much for the reply.  At this point Risque is hiding in a barn and it's too cold to do too much about fairing at the moment.  I'd be happy to make a donation and borrow the templates from you.  Only question is, how to establish contact without divulging personal information on an open forum?

Allan

You can contact me by email at steve(dot)reid(at)allstream(dot)net. Or you can call me at (w) 905-856-8333 or (H) 905-731-5825.
You might want to reconsider doing the work while your boat is in the barn. You should at least asess the amount of firing you need to do while it is inside. I'd be happy to share any advise or help I can with you about the whole process.
by the way where are you located and where do you sail the boat out of.
