I'm a new member and a new owner of a Mk V. Having read many of the messages on this site, I have concluded that most of the owners may not share my problem since most appear to be northern sailors. I am looking to install a bimini for my boat and have found a reputable sailmaker in Houston who can do the job. The problem is that the boom is very low on the Mk V. I am wondering if anyone has installed a bimini on a Mk V and if they have sufficient space under the bimini to do a proper job of sailing. This item is a must for summer sailing in Texas since temperatures of 100 degrees or near 100 degrees are the norm from early June through mid September. Gary

Welcome Gary, I can't address your question but was wondering which marina your boat is in. We have each mark represented at Watergate.

Gary,
There is a Mark V two slips over from me who raised her boom - solved the problem and boat sails well. This requires trimming the top of the main and a few feet of the leech at the top, you loose very little sail area, and it is not expensive. I am in Watergate Pier 6, slip 57 - so look about 53: Trillium, navy trim. I'm at the marina most every weekend.

I am at Harbor One on Eagle Mountain Lake in Fort Worth. If I get down to Galveston, I'll have to wander around and see some sister-ships.
I have a MK IV, bought it last spring. I live in Tampa and have two small children, both fair skinned. After a few hot days on the water, we decided to have a bimini installed. I, too, had problems finding something and had similar worries. I had one specially made by someone who doesn't usually do retail, but since he had never done a C&C 27 before thought it would be interesting. It turned out super: folds up fairly easily for this time of year when I don't want or need it (a little harder to sail, e.g. see the windex), no problem with the split backstay adjuster even with it folded, none of those nylon straps for the kids to trip on, no problem with the boom (he kept it out of the way), and strong enough framing to hold on to. I might have a picture or two of it when I had it up if you are interested. The designer has the specs but I don't know if he would share .

Eagle Mountain Lake, my home waters (or close enough). I started racing Venture 14s up there in the '70s.

I certainly would like to see pictures, if you have them. Gary
