#2 General discussion » Fall screw up caused a frozen split valve » 2010-01-31 11:59:36

This morning I discovered that I had not opened the sink drain seacock after taking the boat out of the water in the fall. And of course at -20c it has frozen and split. It is a Marelon Flanged Seacock and after 2 hours trying to get it appart after 25 years of being together  one of the bolts has broken and it still won't come appart.
It is a MK-V and my question is--- do the bolts go in from the outside?? I would assume they are faired over if so?? And is it a 1/2" or 3/4" valve and thru hull?? I would like to get one ordered while trying to get it appart.
Any advise would be great.
Thanks Jim

any mkv owner using a a-sail instead of a regular spin. i single hand a fair bit and think it would be easier to handle. i do sail on a benny 10r and a melges 24 both using a-sails and feel this is the way to go.  any thoughts on this

I'm about to add extra insulation to my ice box but was wondering if anyone has drilled between the back side of the bulk head(inside starboard cockpit locker) and the ice box to see if there is insulation there. Also between the ice box and from under the sink. I was going to do some exploring there but thought maybe someone has already done this.

I do see that there is plenty of room from the bottom to add 4-6" on the bottom but the sides I'm not sure about.

Thanks in advance

Hi

I am in the process of ordering a new #3 (100%) from north and they are asking if I have inner tracks. I have the tracks rear of the stays that run the lenght of the windows and inner tracks on the combing at the rear. I currently trim the 155% from the rear tracks and the 135% from the mid point of the track below the window. Does anyone have a inner track forward of the windows for a #3 and do you have any pic's???

Thanks Jim D

Hi

Today I took the prop shaft out of my 84 mkv so I could replace the original seal with a PSS dripless to find the shaft damaged (scored). I am looking for a supplier for a new shaft, coupler, and a cutless brg. I was wondering if there are any suppliers in Toronto area for this stuff??

Thanks

#8 Re: General discussion » boom kicker » 2008-07-24 10:48:08

Thanks Steve

I figured I would have to drill them out then find out what size. I will probably just put stainless in even if they are  aluminim. That is going to be a project for next weekend.

I sail out of Collingwood on Georgian Bay.

The ironic thing here is I named my boat a year ago when I first brought in up out of the usa then when checking out this board  I saw a post of yours with a name very simular. Sorry about that.

#11 Re: General discussion » Rig tune up » 2008-05-08 11:51:01

Hi

First I know this is a 4 year old thread but when I did a search this is the only one that came up.

Has anything changed in the last 4 years to change the so called preferd setting for the rig. This is my first year stepping the mast and I want to do it right. The mast was up for me last year when the boat became mine and I made the mistake of not checking anything before taking it down last fall.

I had to take the furling apart over the winter due to the top part of the track being damaged so I had a new forstay cable made. The mast rake is my big concern.

3 questions--- is there a setting for backstay using the loos gauge???  can I reduce or increase the rake at the base of the furling without undoing it from the deck??? what are others using for rake with 3 average weight guys and are you measuring it at the top of the boom or at the deck????

Thanks all and sorry for reviving a old thread

#12 Re: General discussion » mark V traveler experience » 2008-04-12 22:00:35

This won't help but my mainsail trimmer hates the traveler arrangement on my mkv aswell. Same thing before tacking is to go to the low side and cleat.

#13 Re: General discussion » tape varieties » 2008-04-12 21:55:42

I use the white electrical tape on both the 27 mk V and the J105 I race on. The only thing that I have to do is go around every now and then is to cut off the loose ends. And the odd time just retape. A role of white electrical tape is cheep

Good luck finding a Mark V in EXCELLENT CONDITION with new sails for that price. I purchased one last year for that much and had to redo the bottom and purchase new sails. Then build my own trailer. You may have to add another $5000.00 to even be close.
You want mine it will cost you $26,000.00
