The other day I noticed a couple barnacles on the top of the rudder of my Mark 1. As I scraped them off, one of the two rings between the rudder and the hull also came off. It was the upper one and it was quite worn and thin.
At a neighboring boatyard, I saw a similiar set up. He had a hard washer on the bottom of the shaft and a soft washer on the top. They did not seem under pressure as I could rotate them both.
I used the search funtion but could not find any mention of these washers and what their purpose is. That makes me think this is probably a dumb question...do I dare launch without dropping the rudder and replacing this part?
