wheel mounted autopilot

I am new to the forum. I am looking to purchase and install a Wheel mounted autopilot on LaVoie Lac T 1979 Mk III. Any suggestions on a particular model? I have just installed a garmin 721 GPS chartplotter.
thank you for your help.

Re: wheel mounted autopilot

I am in the final process of installing a Raymarine Smart Pilot wheel installation.  Just finished the mechanical parts and it was not as bad as I was expecting.

The wheel part is the most complicated and it was quite easy.

The electronics is next and that should be a breeze.

My boat is all Raymarine, so I don't expect any problems.

Re: wheel mounted autopilot

I have a wheel.

But I use a Tiller Pilot with adapter (from an old Tillermaster)

Works like a charm.

Less complicated and less expense.

I have a spare on board.

Both are Simrad TP10 and bought used.

These units are robust, less complicated and easy to disengage (physically lift off at adapter end).

Cheers

Would you be able to send me photos of what that might look like?

Re: wheel mounted autopilot

Hello René
I am currently in the process of installing a Garmin 721 onto Carriden.  How did you handle the mounting?  If I mount it onto the pedestal guard above the compass, I will need to relocate the control head for my Raymarine Autohelm and so far I am not happy with possible alternate locations.

Re: wheel mounted autopilot

Running the new Raymarine wheel pilot all weekend.  Super easy.  Practically no calibration.
