Outboard Motor Bracket

I have an Mark V with a outboard ( 15 hp Mercury electric start) and the bracket is frozen, I would like to replace it with Garlick model 71056. My question is "is this the best bracket to buy". Could use any suggestion  Kenny

Re: Outboard Motor Bracket

Practical Sailor did a review of eight motor mounts in its Oct. 15, 2000, issue. It essentially rated a Fulton <img src="emoticons/icon_question.gif"> four-stroke bracket as "to choice for any size outboard" but said the comparable Garelick, at US$60 cheaper but "limited to tw-stroke engines", was "extremely easy to use". I can fax you the article if you'll let me have a number; failing that, I'll mail it to your postal address. Cheers.

Re: Outboard Motor Bracket

Because I installed a 4 stroke outboard, which is much heavier (102 lbs) than a typical 2 stroke, I used the Garlock Heavy Duty Offshore bracket (West Marine) on my Mark I.  It is very satisfactory, works well, and my motor is steady as a rock.  I mounted it centerline.
On the "Mark V" you won't have the option of the centerline mount because of your rudder.  You should think carefully about this because of the weight and how it will affect your trim.  Also, the furthur aft you extend, the more immersion you can achieve due to the stern wave.  Don't laugh - this amounts to 6-8" at hull speed.  I have yet to have my prop come out of the water - even in a heavy chop.
By the way, the agonizing decision is "which engine?"  I chose the Yamaha 8 HP 4 stroke instead of the 9.9, or a 15 HP 2 stroke (equilivant power).  This has worked out well, I gained the electric tilt (not available on the 9.9) and don't have to hang over the transom.  Actually, I only use the bracket lift when I change the oil.  I make 5.5 knts at half throttle, about 6 knts at 3/4 throttle, and going to full throttle only lifts the bow.
Hope this helps.  Anyone wanting pictures, pictures, measurements, etc. are available for the asking.
