Tal and David, my thanks for your input, I now believe that I may have sorted it all out. The 'ratchet knob thingy' which faces upwards will be the responsibility of my foredeck hand, and the 'ratchet knob thingy' that faces downwards will be handled by David's 12 year-old short-term visitor. The latter will be in a harness which is tethered to the barber hauler system with a quick release snap shackle (Merriman of course), and surfing along immediately below the other 'thingy'. Upon hearing Big Ben strike midnight he will alter the direction of the arrow and depart in the direction of the painted down arrows. Problem solved.
