Why no on-line membership option?

Greetings,

A portion of President Larry's explanation of the absence of an on-line membership application and payment system was accidentally dropped from our annual membership drive letter. For those who wonder why we don't offer this time-saver, an explanation:

Banks and card issuers have responded vigorously to credit card fraud and identity theft, to the point where it's impossible for us to accept credit cards on our own. There are service providers who will do this for us, but their fees, for the small volume we deal in, would be impossibly high.

We hope you understand that we have decided to concentrate on value over convenience, and we further hope that this will not prejudice your decision to join the Association.

Re: Why no on-line membership option?

We don't meet their criteria because our annual income is grouped in one or two months. They don't like payees that have a burst of activity, then nothing, which is our situation.

And call me old-fashioned, but I don't think writing a cheque and putting a stamp on an envelope is _that_ big a hassle. Now neither of my 20-ish children have chequebooks, and they're probably typical, so we may be headed up a dead end here, but for the moment, we're getting by.

There is also the issue of "What's this all for?" I think I speak for all the people who contribute time to the Assoc in saying that the Assoc and the website are means to an end (having fun with our boats) rather than an end in themselves. We _might_ be able to stickhandle our way into a Paypal account, but that's another administrative task to perform. All of us get enough of that on a daily basis without inventing more. That way lies burnout, and as the bumper sticker says, "We'd rather be sailing."

But thanks for the thought.
