I have a 1974 Mark II and i seem to be missing a part that stops the boom from rotating. Upon inspection it looks like there is some kind of gear missing that fits into the boom just before it meets the mast. without this piece, the boom swivels freely around about 30 degrees. any idea what this missing piece is, where i can find one, or what i might stick in there to make it stop swivelling?
The boom on the Mark I was a "roller furling boom" and should rotate 360 degrees. I have a late Mk I - #208, which seems to be a hybrid. It has a babystay as opposed to lowed forward shrouds, plus the newer "tall rig".
You should be able to find a place to insert a bolt in either the front or rear end unit to secure from rotation. I have also noted that the oval Mk I booms are much more robust thean the "box style" Mk II. Perhaps you and others could post some pictures to give us all a measure of the different hardware.
What does your boom vang look like? Do you have the "clamshell" attachment?Warren Smith

Pura Vida is a 1974 MK II and the boom also rotates. This is not the roller furling boom like found on Warren's boat, which is very robust. The boom extrusion is a 4" by 21/4" oval and that is roughly the same size as the boom on a Catalina 25 I once owned. The boom on the Catalina would rotate also. I looked at a MK III on my dock and it seems to have the same boom that my MK II has but the forward mounted traveler would prevent rotation. I could not find any way of locking the boom on Pura Vida so I suspect that some play was planned, possibly to reduce the wear on the sail. You may want to try South Shore in the links section.

I'm looking for a mainsail tack shackle for that type of rotating boom for my '71 MK I, hull # 84., which, if bolted will not rotate.

I took my boom off for the storm and decided to try and get the original roller furling working. If anyone has the handle that fits inside the worm gear I would like to see a photo of it so I can fabricate a copy. Or if you would want to sell let me know the price. Again I have the thin, oval extrusion rotating boom on a MKII not the round MKI boom. thanks
