Chainplate deck bolts

Hi - does anyone know how the deckbolts for the chainplate work on a MKV?

It seems there are 6 bolts on the deck but only 5 nuts on the underside.

Re: Chainplate deck bolts

Hi Tim.  I happened to have re-bedded my chain plate last year.  The missing "bolts" are actually screws so they don't penetrate into the cabin's interior.
Several of my bolts were bent so it too some effort to get them undone.  I recommend that you pick up a few extra to have on hand when you're ready to do the work.
Good luck

Wonderful Pat - thanks so much for the reply.  That thought did cross my mind, but I didn't think that they would do that!  Seems crazy to have screws on something that's under so much stress.

Your timing is perfect - I'm heading down tomorrow to check it out.

Cheers.

Thanks Jim,

It's my first boat, so more cruising than racing for the first year, but I'll likely try a couple of the less serious races mid season.

Re: Chainplate deck bolts

I started the chainplate rebedding operation on my mark V. I found that the starboard plate -forward side-outside nut is blocked by the cabin liner over the head sink. I can see the nut, but i cannot get the socket up into the hole because of the cabin liner. Is this unique to hull#594? I plan to remove a little bit of the cabin liner with a dremel.

when i get all the nuts and bolts out, how do i lift the plate cover which seems pretty well sealed onto the deck? try to insert a putty knife and lift?

and when I get it up and remove the old sealer, is 4200 the right grade for the rebedding?

Re: Chainplate deck bolts

Hi

- pry it up with a putty knife, or you may need a small chisel if it is stuck on good

- 4200 is fine

-make sure to remove all old bedding

- when bedding, use lots of 4200, insert the bolts and attach nuts, but tighten only half way; wait for the 4200 to set overniight, then tighten hard to squeeze down on the bedding.  Don't allow the bolts to turn when you do the 2nd tightening or it will break the seal around the bolts.

Re: Chainplate deck bolts

For beginner racing, try the AHMEN series - low pressure, very casual, white sail fleets.

If you want a look at racing MKV you are welcome to come crew on my boat any time to see how it is done.

Re: Chainplate deck bolts

Hi Copasetic, I managed to get a deep socket in at an angle to get on to the nut that seems too close to the liner.

Jim - thanks for the offer.  I'd love to come out and see your boat in action.

Re: Chainplate deck bolts

Prying things up can sometimes pull off gelcoat. If this plate is stuck down with 5200 adhesive, you can break it with acetone (but don't let it run all over the place and particularly keep it away from plexiglass). Another way to release something stuck down with adhesive or tenacious bedding compound is to get a piece of fine wire under an edge, then pull it between the object and whatever it's stuck to.
