I am looking at purchasing a 1984 C&C 27, Mark V. My concerning is the 8 HP single cylinder motor. Is this sufficient to move the boat in most situations? Has anyone upgraded to a 2 cylinder motor? Thanks.

Hi. I have had a Mk V for two seasons. I believe the 8 hp engine is adequate. I lake sail, and the roughest conditions in which I have used it were with about 20 to 25 knots of wind and 3.5 to 4 foot waves. I could only make 3 to 3.5 knots into the wind and waves, instead of the 5.5 to 6 knots (6 knots is hull speed for a Mk V) in calmer conditions. This is why you will see reference to motor sailing in rough conditions with this boat, but overall I think the engine is adequate. Mine responds a bit slower and won't rev as high as it should (2900 vs. 3600 rpm) because the previous owner installed a folding prop one inch too large in diameter . More power is always nice, but it is a great little engine and I have motored all day and it hasn't missed a beat, and is very good for the environment. Besides, it is a sailboat, which sails beautifully in both light and heavy wind (as long as you reef early), so in my opinion, its a pretty good match!

Our Mk V has the 1GM Yanmar. Only once did I find it was underpowered while trying to head against the wind in to an ancorage as a storm was whipping up and the wind was right on the nose. Sort of had to "tack" or way in as the wind head on was not letting us make any way.
I have had long motors (ie, 25nm) as well when we had to get back and had zero wind. Makes 5 knots comfortably.
The 2gm is nicer motor, more balanced, less vibration but I wouldn't even begin to contemplate re-powering the Mk V. The boat doesn't like weight aft as is, wouldn't want a larger motor on it.
Thanks for your response. I feel more confident in purchasing the boat; and I put a deposit on "Gemini", a C&C27 today! I will have it inspected next week, and hope to close the deal by the first of October. Thanks for your input.

the 1GM on my boat is fine in all conditions. When I bought the boat it had the factorey supplied fixed prop - with that I could not power into a heavy chop, and reverse was the pits. I changed to a flex-o-fold folding prop - now I never lack for power in the heaviest seas, and it reverses faster than my car
Jim W, What size is your Flex-o-fold for your Mark V 8-hp 1GM10 single cylinder yanmar motor? The Black Arts describes Gori folding propellers but nothing on the flex-o-fold. Thanks
If Flex-o- Fold is like Gori, they will have a questionaire on their web site which allows you to enter details about your boat and engine, and then does a calculation as to the recommended prop.

I got advice on prop choices from the Flexofold rep in North America, who nailed both the blade size for my A4 and for the Yanmar that replaced it. However -- with the Yanmar he said "this size is my first choice, but you could also try this other size". Fortunately I took the first choice because the second choice would have hit the rudder when folding. Experiences like that -- my own and others' -- are the main reason for the listing of props and people's experiences with them.
