Fuel Indicator

My fuel indicator has stopped working when the blower motor stopped.  I tapped the motor and it works now but no luck with the fuel gague.  I have a 73 Mark II.  Any suggestions

Re: Fuel Indicator

The most likely culprit is corrosion of connectors and/or corrosion at the contact and up inside the wire.  On my boat I have chased almost all the wiring and have replaced the connectors, cleaned the contacts and grounds and use a thin film of di-electric grease where ever the is a contact or ground lug etc.
You may want to replace the sending unit in the tank.... easy job, but make sure you get one that is aluminum and stainless steel.. the old steel ones did rust in the tank.

Re: Fuel Indicator

Thanks for the quick reply.  Do you know where I can get the sending unit?

Re: Fuel Indicator

You can get a sending unit from west marine, if you go to their online catalog you will see a good selection of sending units and gauges... I replaced both units.  Now, check your tank dimensions because the sending units come in different lengths and to add to the fray, the tanks may have baffles.  What all this means is that you may have to adjust the new sending unit to fit inside your tank... it will only take a few minutes, but it is better than having your gauge read half full when you are running out of fuel.
Best if Luck,

Re: Fuel Indicator

ATTENTION: all steel fuel tank sender users.  Replace them now!  I submited two pics to David, they may make it to the Black Art page.  Nevertheless, these are nasty devices.  If a fuel gauge is suspect, place an ohmmeter on the wires and watch for deflection, if you have deflection then you know the gauge is working and that the sender is the culprit.  Caution - remove the sender very carefully, because all/some of the rust that could have materialized will sure as ???? end up in your tank, like mine.  (along with part of the paper gasket) I can only speculate, but if you have a cork / cardboard gasket then you have a steel sender and should switch to an aluminum and rubber unit.
