Greetings all,
I have a fairly specific whisker pole question to which I was unable to find an answer on reviewing old posts. Here goes - - I was to buy a whisker pole for my Mark V primarily for racing when we are using the 153 genoa. I am looking at Forespar and trying to decide between the Line Control 10 - 18 and the Twist control 7 - 17. Does anyone out there have any specific experience or advice on this question. Thanks in advance.

Hi Steve I have used a twist control type of wisker pole for racing and found it very slow to set and remove, the other type that used to be available is one with a spring pin located on the side and you drill the two holes to match the length required (one hole for your #1 and one for the #3). This type of pole is also very quick to jibe or remove. The line control ones are ok but I think the pin type is better for racing, hope this helps.

Steve....I used the twist lock model 6-12 for a few years on my Hunter 27...Found it worked just fine. I marked the tube with indelible marker at two spots so I could lock the tube before attempting to set the pole.
Unfortunately I sold the pole with boat when I gave up sailing. I'm into it again with a 1985 C&C 27 Mark V & I'm thinking about getting another pole. Feel free to e-mail me direct

Thanks to both of you for your reply.
Lou, in the absence of being able to chat by email, feel free to call me. I am in the book in South Burlington, Vermont. I think I saw you out on the lake last year. We do a lot of day cruising during the week from Shelburne Bay to the Four Brothers and over to Willsboro Bay; on weekends we seem mostly to head south to Converse Bay or further. There is another Mark V that races on Wednesdays at our club (Monk) and I think there are one or two over at Mallet's Bay.
Thanks again.
Steve

For my C&C 24, my sailmaker fitted a carbon-fiber windsurfer mast with whisker pole ends. It is very light and easy to use.the secret is to find a used spar that has become separated from the windsurfer itself so you don't have to buy the whole package. If i get a 27 mark V, I will use it because it was overlong for the 24 with a 150 genoa and is closer to legal for a 27 mark V.
I have read these comments with great interest as I was thinking about getting a whisker pole (I had one for my little 15 foot dingy and it was great). And I love recycling - ie the wind surfer mast idea - what lenght should the pole be for a 150 genoa?
Thanks. Barry Oasis 1987 Mk V
length of whisker pole-i think each racing association has its own rule. the YRALIS (thats for long island sound) sets it as 80% of LP ( the perpendicular from luff to clew. I think that LP for a 155 genoa is 15, hence legal pole is 12. Windsurfer masts are normally about 15. So it depends how rule-conscious your group is as to how much you shorten the mast. A 15 footer would work fine on a MKV

correction-this is copied from yralis
Pole Length: Whisker poles may not be longer than
“LP” without penalty. Extendable poles must be
banded to indicate their maximum permitted length.
