MkV Prop

Does anyone have any experience with putting either a 3 bladed fixed or a good geared feathering prop on a Mk5 with a 10 Hp Yanmar in it. A new boat onwer at my club wants to install one, as his main purpose is cruising and we have lots of current around the club so he needs something that will give him lots of power and also requires good reverse. Any experience with size and pitch would be appreciated.

Re: MkV Prop

Jeez, we keep getting these newbies who don't read what's already on the site...

There is one Mk V owner with a Gori who says he's happy with his prop <http://www.cc27association.com/fixes/props.html >. The others have reservations. My own experience with the fellow at Flexofold has been solidly positive. He already knew the right prop for a 27 with an A4; when I put the diesel in, he nailed the diameter and pitch, so the boat hits hull speed with a little in the bank. If your friend is feeling flush, he could spring for a Gori 3-blade <http://www.cc27association.com/fixes/props/props.html >.

Re: MkV Prop

I put on a Flex-o-Fold five years ago - and the performance is outstanding - much better power than the factory fixed prop, and it stops on a dime in reverse

Re: MkV Prop

I had read the "props' section, but no one had mentioned a 3 blade specifically as we was looking for. Also, even after going to Flex-o-Folds website, it appears their "gear driven" is still a centrifugal force driven prop with a gear on each blade, so that if one opens, then the second[or third] has to. However, it doesn't state [or I can't read it as such] in their "technical" section that they have a  center gear like my "Max Prop" has. With my "Max Prop" on Yogi, if the shaft turns in either direction then the blades are all driven into the forward or reverse position by a positive series of gears. Thus, you can be assured that even at idle speeds that the prop is in either the required reverse or forward position and you don't have to give the throttle a blip as has been my experience with centifugal folding props.

Re: MkV Prop

You are right that a Flexofold is centrifugally opened, but I've never had to blip mine the way you had to with Martec and Michigan non-geared units. Even at low speeds, it opens freely. In fact, it seems to be biased toward being open, so you have to lock the shaft after the engine is shut down or the prop will stay open and free-wheel.

For the Props page, what are Yogi's prop's diameter and pitch?
