I'm a new owner of a 1971 C&C 27 Mk I. The serial number on the plate in the cockpit is CC 27 73 71 N. I assume this means that it was constructed in 1971 and is hull number 73. There is no number on the sail. What is the convention for 27s for sail numbers?
I asked the same question some time ago and the answer I was given from some of the very knowledgeable forum contributors was that the numbers on the sails were primarily for racing identification and not related to the hull number or any manufacturer's number at all. I am assuming this still holds true.
I know you can apply for a racing number, e.g. CAN1234 (used to be KC1234) but most boats have a sail number given by the manufacturer. My last boat was a Martin 242 and the sail number that came with the boat was also the hull number. I was wondering if that was appropriate for the C&C 27 and whether others had done this.
My understanding is that there was (or is) some sort of central registry of sail numbers. Manufacturers would be assigned a block of numbers, which they would then assign to boats as they were built. Therefore, C&C's of a similar vintage tend to have sail numbers which are close to each other. Once a block of numbers ran out, the manufacturer would be assigned a new block of numbers, which were usually NOT contiguous with their previous block, so an apparent numbering gap would ensue.
Some classes of boats have their own numbering systems. For the Shark, the sail number is the same as the hull number. I presume that this is also true for Lasers.
You are drawing inferences from somewhat dissimilar entities. One-design classes such as your 242, Dragons, Etchells, etc., normally bear a number assigned by the class association as authorized by the national sailing organization. There are a few 27's that have hull numbers on their sails (my neighbour, Escapade, hull no. 42, is one), but most of those who race, race in mixed offshore fleets where the requirement is a number that the owner (not the builder) obtains from the national sailing organization - see http://www.sailing.ca/competitive/regulations/numbers.shtm or http://www.ussailing.org/offshore/SailNoSys.htm .
