Mark IV Questions?? Help appreciated!!

Hello,
I am currently looking at an 1982 27 Mk IV. Did the mark IV come originally with a walk-through style bow pulpit? This particular boat has the old "non-walk-through " Mk III style.
The boat is powered by a Yanmar 8hp!!! I had always thought (from original brochures and hearsay) that an '82 came originally with a 12 hp yanmar!! Is 8hp enough to push the boat through hard weather?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice on these 2 questions.
Cheers,  Mark

Re: Mark IV Questions?? Help appreciated!!

Our Mk IV has the standard full-height pulpit.

8HP sounds a bit on the fair-weather side to me, too. Are you sure that it's a YSB8 and not a YSB12 - these things all look alike and it could just be a mistaken assumption.

The major knock against these engines is not their power but the vibration, so if you could use the deficiency of the 8HP engine as a negotiating point to bring the price down, it might be worth swapping it out for a new smoother-running diesel.

Re: Mark IV Questions?? Help appreciated!!

Hello David,
Thanks for your reply. It was the boat saleperson's listing notes that indicated that it was an 8 hp. When I viewed the boat on my own, I removed the cover for the engine and it looked much like YSB8 as on a CS27. However you are right in saying that these things all look alike. I am hoping it is the YSB12 of course!! I will somehow have to verify with the owner as to whether it is, or is not. Overall, how do you rate the YSB12 as far as reliability? Ease of maintenance etc?? As you stated they are rough running and as I can remember loud too, much like the older YSE versions.
Regards,
MARK

I can't tell you about the YSB8 or 12 because I don't have one. My boat originally had an Atomic 4 (they remained available for those who wanted a smooth-running engine), which I recently replaced with a Yanmar 2YM15.

I've never heard any negatives with regard to Yanmars and reliability.
