While doing some maintenance, I inadvertently deleted a question and answer related to through-hulls. Normally, accidental deletions are easy to recover, but this one refuses to be repaired. Sorry questioner, sorry responder (but questioner, if you had registered and signed in, it would not have been necessary to submit a near-duplicate of the original post, which the Admin couldn't bear to leave cluttering up the board).
The most important aspect of the thread is a link to what seems a fairly authoritative article on grounding at http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/westadvisor/10001/-1/10001/groundingsystems.htm - Admin

My apologies, I have since registered.
My question had to do with my boat #245 having the thru hulls and shaft strut bonded via a #8 or #10 solid copper wire soldered to the valve bodies. I'm going to replace the gate valves with brass ball valves.
If I read the article correctly, I should remove the bonding wire altogether. Any comments would be appreciated!Dave Green

[If you're going to the trouble and expense of replacing your gate valves, consider replacement with seacocks of either bronze or Marelon. Ball valves are nice, but brass is not a particularly noble metal and is much less corrosion-resistant than bronze. Marelon eliminates the corrosion issue entirely. The only knock against Marelon seacocks seems to be the extra work of fitting them, where bronze seacocks are a drop-in replacement. Search 'seacock' and 'Marelon' to find extensive discussions by people who researched this last year. - Admin]

My reply was that my boat had been set up with all of the thru hulls bonded as well. I believe that items like through-hulls that are isolated do not need to be bonded to the ground and that the method outlined in the article was what planned to do. I was logged in but may have taken too long to complete my post.
