Rudder replacment

I will be removing my rudder for repairs. Have any advise as to what if any seals should be replaced as well.m Not quite sure as to what I am getting into once I go to re-install it.

Thanks

Re: Rudder replacment

What Mark model? Tiller or wheel?  I know from my experience on Mark 2(tiller) that there are no seals in the rudder tube as this tube extends above the waterline. If wheel steering, there probably is a stuffing box as well as the associated steering parts to be disconnected.
If tiller model, simple matter to drop/install rudder although you may have to dig a hole or jack up the hull to allow sufficient clearance.

Re: Rudder replacment

I've looked at Tropical Warren's MK I and his rudderpost tube extends to the base of the cockpit. My MK II was delivered with a quadrant but no wheel. The dealer added a tiller after the factory delivered it. The rudderpost tube extends above the waterline but not to the floor of the cockpit. There is some type of rusty, knotted, mess on the rudderpost above the tube. Would that rusty knotted mess be a packing gland to prevent water from getting into the boat? Some water does leak in via the rudder when she is pushed hard. I had planned on making a watertight boot to seal the rudderpost between the cockpit and the tube. I am interested to hear how other boats are setup. And Bob, I may be interested in your rudder in the near future.

Re: Rudder replacment

It is a Mark 3 wheel . Sounds like this could be a big project. You say the may be a stuffing box arrangment.?
I will let you know how I make out.

Re: Rudder replacment

I removed my Mk I rudder, Hull #208, in the water.  Tiller, straight thru tube.  It weighed 69 lbs.  I replaced it from in the water also, fortunately I could stand on the bottom with scuba gear and do it.
