mainsheet stuff

I have a MKII.  I want to move the traveler and have been reading "black arts".  Several people have moved their mainsheet off the end of the boom.  My question is, how have you attached the mainsheet to the boom?  I have heard of collars, drilling holes in the boom and other solutions, but since lots of you have done this, what was your solution?

Re: mainsheet stuff

Charles,
I have a Mk I and moved the main to the coach roof top without a traveler.  I use the two main system - and I love it!  No vang is required!  Anyway, my boom is pretty hefty, and two riggers recommended a 3/8 bolt through a hole - that's all.  I have done so and there seems to be no problem whatsoever.  If you want some pictures write to me at wbstx at aol.

Re: mainsheet stuff

Thanks for the reply Warren.  I put a bolt through the boom on an older Catalina 27 that I sailed to attach a boom vang, it worked great.  The reason I asked about attaching the mainsheet etc. it that around my dock when I mentioned I was going to drill a hole in my boom, all the dock rats winced and said I shouldn't.  I guess it wasn't a yachty thing to do or maybe they were concerned that the boom would have too much stress on it or something.  Anyway, I think I will drill the hole and go sailing.  Thanks again.

If there is a slot in the bottom of the boom you can use a "padeye' sized appropriately and minimize drilling.

Re: mainsheet stuff

For what it's worth, when I installed my dodger last season, I moved the bail back about 12 inches to give me additional clearance for my mainsheet (on a bridgedeck-mounted traveller) when the boom is winged out. It entailed drilling a quarter-inch hole horizontally through the boom and relocating the fastener that holds the bail. I closed off the original hole with one of those "Chicago bolts" that come in two halfs, one of which threads into the other and results in an almost flush surface at both ends; any good fastener supplier carries them. Many people shy away in horror from drilling holes in any part of their boats, but I think in this case the loads are such that there should be no problem.

Re: mainsheet stuff

There was a lengthy thread on traveller placement a little over a year ago. About the same time one of the sailing magazines, Ocean Navigator or Good Old Boat, ran an article about an Ericson owner who went to mid boom sheeting, was caught in a blow and the boom was bent at the bolt holes. While the issue deserves consideration, the Ericson story sounds like the proverbial exception.

Re: mainsheet stuff

I wouldn't want to get too excited about the possibility of breaking the boom. According to the sailplan I have for a Mk III, the point of attachment on the boom lies 92% of the way aft along the boom's length to the mainsail clew. The remaining eight percent is not a lot of length to build up a destructive leverage. I appreciate that a Mk I's E is six inches longer, but the sail is significantly smaller, so the total load is probably equal if not less.
