Hi, my family and I are looking at a '73 C&C 27 Mark II. One of our concerns is sleeping accomodations. I'm 6 ft, and I tried the V-berth when looking over the boat. I would fit, as long as the wife didn't need much foot room at the front of the V...
I didn't have a measuring tape for the dinette berth, but it also looks like a possibility for 2, although I've heard it referred to as a single berth <img src="emoticons/icon_question.gif">. Anyone know the length of the dinette berth when down, and if it's decent for two?

I am not sure of the length, but for myself (5'8") and my wife(5'6") we find the V-berth rather cozy (not to mention having to sleep "head-down", the dinette is merely a wide single, and the starboard bunk is suitable for neither sitting nor sleeping.
Our answer for sleeping is a Queen-size bed athwart-ships. I added 1x1 teak strips to the existing teak rails to support crossmembers, bought and covered extra foam pieces (store in the V-berth) and now have a generous bunk across the boat. True it is a little more of a deal to set up, but since it is only the two of us, we have all the V-berth for storage and generally everything is better. Since we are in a warm climate, most of the time we need room rather than to be bundled up close.
Yes, we suffer with the heat down hear on the third coast, the day after Christmas we had a nice sail in the mid 70's!

About 6 years ago now, I used a similar but more radical solution than Warren to solve what I saw on Aragorn as a conflict between our two uses of the boat -namely; racing and cruising. Racing headsails and spinnakers always filled the V berth and if they stayed aboard when we went cruising, there was really no good bunk for two people elsewhere but unloading and reloading those racing sails was too much of a pain.
I was having some deck repairs done over that winter and I decided at the same time to do some "surgery" down below to improve the sleeping situation. I had the boatyard cut off the outboard end of the aft dinnette bench and the outboard end of the port-side aft bulkhead (cutting both of them in as far as the front of the icebox) and then I had them join what was left of the aft bench to the forward dinnette bench thus creating an "L" shaped settee. My cushions were a hideous red/white/blue plaid which really dated the boat and since a few new cushions were needed anyway to fit the new configuration of benches, I re-upholstered everything inside (including the V berth) with a more conservative fabric. (Surprisingly, the 22 year old foam itself was in great shape!!)
Like Warren, I added some teak slats to the outer edges of the benches but my solution to creating a Queen + bed athwartships was to build a bulkhead mounted drop-down table. At the lower drop-down level, it fills the gap between the upper edges of the port and stb. benches to make the bed. A combination of some old and some new cushions covers the table-top nicely between the two settees to make up the bed in an area about 5' X 8'. With practice, 5 minutes makes up or stores away the bed.
At the higher drop-down level, the new table serves as either a half-sized table in front of the port settee or, with the second leaf raised, it's a full-sized table in front of both settees. We can seat 6 round that table for card games.
The extra bonus in the new configuration was a tremendous change in the interior appearance of the cabin--- It seems so much roomier below without the dinnette.

I've never taken any pictures with the idea of illustrating the changes I made but I could do that. The boat is currently under her winter tarp and snow but I have to go in soon to get some things off the boat that I'll need on a charter on Jan. 28th. Wow, thanks for the great replies. I enjoyed reading the article in the "Black Arts" section. I should know in a day or two if we're the owners of a C&C 27 Mark II, and you'll likely get sick of seeing my posts and questions if we are.
