I'm planning on doing some of the distance single-handed races on lake Ontario.
I'm new to the MkV and would like to know your opinions on sail plans for various conditions.
I have a mani with two reefs and a 155 roller furling genoa and a 100% non-furling jib. How would you guys set up your sails for singlehanding in various wind strengths?
I have rigged my cunningham to an S hook which leads to the mast base to a block and then through one of the organizer sheaves and back to a easylock cleat. The cunningham S hook also doubles as the reef hook for 1 and 2 to pull the main down at the mast to the point where the mast and the boom meets. This eliminates the need to go to the mast when lowering the halyard for reefing, and avoids pinched fingers using those hooks on the boom.
My boat is a shoal draft but I have found a double reef is needed in over 35 knots and the head sail should be about 3/4 furled up in these conditions.
Last week it blew about 25 - 30 knots and a single reef helped and a 25 % furled jib
I also recommend an autohelm 1000 for the tiller. I can't imagine owning my boat without it.
Regards
Cameron
