Discolored gelcoat

I am the proud owner of a MKII, #332.  I have discoloration on the deck, starboard side, near the second lifeline stanchion.  No softness, no cracking, just loss of color.  Also, some really small hairline cracks, with a blackish ring around the crack.  Again no softness or flaking.  The small (size of a dime) rings are not in proxcimity to the large discoloration.  I am thinking of painting the deck with off white deck paint, but hesitate, thinking I may have more of a problem than off-color deck or loss of color.  It's almost like the gelcoat lost its color, but maintained its strength.  Weird.  It's a rather large area, about the size of the bottom of a bucket.  Since I am not the original owner and know little about the history of this particular boat, I feel it may be an old repair that was glassed, then painted, and the paint has deteriorated.  Any ideas.  I love my boat, and am really happy for all you guys up north having each other for resources and sounding boards.  I enjoy reading the forum, and check it every other day or so.  Charlie Sheets, Lake Lanier, Georgia.  Oh by the way, redundant question, I am looking for a good price and good quality mainsail, anyone have a supplier you recommend?

Re: Discolored gelcoat

Pura Vida has similar discoloration in dime size rings that I am guessing is due to mold. Often a good cleaning with bleach will remove most of the black only to have it return fter a week or so. For my boat I suspect that in the past someone has dropped the pole or a tool on deck causing small round fractures that the mold grows in. It may not fit your situation but that's my guess.

Re: Discolored gelcoat

I think that is a good guess.  As I said there does not seem to be any weakness in the deck, just a loss of white paint.  Hey, I saw a documentary on tanker surfers in Galveston bay, have you seen those guys?  Last thing, I sail on a lake, and catalina 27's and oday 272 are abundant.  I think my C&C is a better built boat, but have never sailed one on the ocean, or gulf.  How does your C&C handled the swells, and chop and sudden storms of the gulf?  I am hoping to move mine to a gulf site, or possibly St. Augustine or Jacksonville.  How does your A4 take to salt water?  Hey, thanks for the guess, I concur.

Re: Discolored gelcoat

I've not seen anyone tanker surfing but understand they surf near the Texas City Dike. The depths there are often hobie and sailboard range just off the channel. Having seen some of the bigs wakes the ships create along the dike I suspect that surfing them would not be too difficult (as long as you don't hit the rock). Warren or Dave my be more informative about sailing their 27s in the Gulf. The Great Lakes sailors may chime in as they can get some rough weather. Pura Vida has only been in the bay with my hand at the tiller although I'm considering running down to Freeport when the job settles down. I left an 1986 Catalina for my 1974 C&C and think the C&C is a superior boat in every way once away from the dock. The bay can get pretty choppy with an East wind and my C&C handles it better than my Catalina. Pura Vida has a Yanmar 2GMF frewhwater cooled diesel so I can't comment on the A4 except to say a lot of boats still have them here.
I'm curious if the Great Lakes boats experience much mold.
