Removing SS screws from aluminum

Too common of a problem on an old boat.  I have to dis-assemble my boom and these screws have probably been in place at least 20 years.  Any ideas/stories of success from anyone?
I have soaked in 3M penetrating solvent (better than wd-40, etc) and only have one of eight out so far.  One suggestion is to use an impact wrench, but I am afraid of twisting off the heads.

I simply drilled mine out and, once the boom had been cleaned and powder-coated, used appropriately pop rivets to reattach the fittings. I also had removed the end fittings so cleaning out the drill detritus wasn't a problem. Obviously the task is a bit more complicated if you have an internal outhaul; I didn't. Good luck.

A heat gun will sometimes break the bond, at least enough to get some penetrating oil in (aluminum expands more than s/s, apparently). I did once have some success by making a little dam of window putty around a screw, then filling the pond thus created with penetrating oil.

Dave,
Thanks for the clue.  I have never heard of "Big Dog" - do you who makes it?  So far I have had best luck with 3M Penetrating Solvent.  It is definately much better than WD-40, Liquid Wrench, etc., local riggers swear by it and it has served me well in the past.
I was forced to delay the task due to this 80 degree weather - and enjoy the beautiful sailing before it gets hot.  When the time comes I plan to make little donut dams with RTV and fill with penetrant.  I tested it and was able to get one screw loose.  With this oval boom I will have to rotate and do it six times plus stand it on end once.  Maybe next winter?

Re: Removing SS screws from aluminum

This is the best keep secret that many mechanics use to remove stubborn bolts. Take a torch (or maybe a heat gun will work), get the screws as hot as possible( without melting them of course), then take a cup of cold water and splash them with it. The drastic change in temperature usually breaks the bond that time has welded shut. You may have to repeat this on very stubborn ones. Good luck! This trick has saved me time and frustration on several accounts.
Best regards!
