I read with interest all the posts re prep for Winter. Being a Great Lakes sailor for a hundred years I always enjoyed the Winter layup ritual and all the stuff that goes with it----'specially the plans for re-launch "next spring" and the to-do list.
The purpose of this post is to invite all those soon to be snowed in to visit us in Florida. We own a marina in sunny Ft Myers---those that arrive in a c/c27 will be my guest for dockage. If you leave your boat in a snow bank---and get to Fl some other way----stop in and visit----I always look for an excuse to go sailing and "out-of-town" guests is good enough. Besides, everyone can comment on the "re-birth" of my 1976 Mk 111--and tell me how I should have done it--lol.
All are welcome.

Hi Capt Dave,
Just finally tucked my boat in for the winter yesterday.
Kind offer. Wish kids, work, finances etc. would permit a sailing escape this winter <sigh>. Will have to rely on this site and accounts of those of you in warmer climates to feed my sailing addicition for the next several months.
Cheers,
Robert

Greetings from the deeply-frozen North, Dave. Some of our members are ice-boating and are trying to entice the rest of us with stories about phenomenal acceleration, etc. The concept of having to wear a full immersion suit (much good may it do us in 35-degree water!) and full-face motorcycle helmet while "sailing" is somehow anathema. That said, I'm trying to sort out an eBay transaction with a company in Clearwater. I know that's a fair piece north of Fort Myers but I'm hoping you can help. The company is Tropical Marine. I have an e-mail address and a telephone number, but the proprietor (Donny somebody) has yet to respond to several messages and calls. I've tried to get a postal address from various websites, to no avail. Would you have access to a phone book that would show an address? The phone number is 727-710-1959. Sorry to bother you with this but any assistance would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

To All,
I can extend that offer somewhat if you get to Houston, I don't own a Marina so let me know in advance so I can postpone painting the house or mowing the yard or whatever. Also you are invited to sail with me and inspect my restoration of "Serendipity" a 1972 MK I Hull #208. Since I am early in the restoration project - I invite suggestions.
By the way, today was 74F with a light SW breeze. But if you take me up on that you may have to reciprocate in August when it's over 100F with 90%+ humidity, I might be on my way to Canada LOL

Hello Capt. Dave;
Well, do to some recent cold weather and changes in plans, I might just take you up on that offer to go for a sail.
We've decided to take the kids to Orlando for Spring Break [ Mar 12-19 ] and I'm Disneyed -out, so I might just take a run down for a day sail with you after I get them settled in. It would probably be a good healer for my last fall"s surgery and all.
I'll be in touch.

Larry----by then I'll have completed the install on the new Mermaid Air Cond. unit. I sought advice here on the list---no reply----so---I'll be the first---maybe.
Mermaid has a 5200 btu unit that measures 11x15x11---just right for thr hanging locker---withe good discharge to the v-berth and main cabin. Will temporarily plumb to the raw water-in for the head sink.
I know you'se Northern guys think I'm nuts----but hey---flip the switch and it heats. Pricey, compared to ceramic heaters----
We old guys cant take the fl summers----so if I cant tie up at my favorite tropical resort----I'll ruff it on the hook with a purring Honda 1000 watt feeding the air unit.
Keep me posted----Best----Dave Tinder

I can relate totally as I happen to be in the Air Conditioning business and will have to personaly check this installation out and see if it meets code and Class regulations !

Dave,
This sounds great, but let me guess . . . it costs more than $100?

Since Larry is going to personally check out the install on the air unit I'm going to double clamp all those PVC fittings that are below the waterline. Since my wife has no idea how much this stuff costs----I'm not about to divulge that info here. With the upgrade to double clamps we may exceed the $100 limit. Further info will be on a "need to know" basis. Best---Dave Tinder

Hey Dave,
Where can I get one? I've saved more than $103 from my xs bus fare change LOL.
Seriously, what is the ball park $ for the unit?

The mermaid 5200 btu unit is about 1400 bucks with the install kit. I do have a new, in the box, Criuse Aire 5k unit that fits the f'wrd hatch. A bit cumbersome for storage if you take it with you---but leave it dockside and they do a fine job on 25-27'. Current price on the new 6K btu units is approx $900. I can part with this one for $375 plus freight if anyone is interested.Dave Tinder

Dave,
Thanks for the offer on the carry on AC - that's a good deal for someone, but since this old body suffered a herniated disk, I split a bag of sugar in half to pick it up. I use a block and tackle to move the $79 Walmart window unit in and out of the lazarette for mounting with a hatchboard arrangement. Still would like to have an installed unit if I could get into one reasonable.

I am going to try using one of the Sunpentown WA-1220E 12,000 portable (I bought 4, 3 for house and 1 for boat) at $409.00 per. My plan is to set it in the closet across from the head and run the 6 foot outlet hose to the hatch. I've done the measuring and have the units - theoretically it should work. I'll let you know around July - right now cooling is not an issue. The good news is I've walked accross the bridge 3 days in a row and didn't need the 7 layers of scarves. Spring will be here soon.Horace Henderson

Hello Dave;
I'm very sorry that I was unable to stick to my promise of visiting you in Ft. Myers when I was in Florida 2 weeks ago. We were in Orlando, however when my wife realized how much further [ 4 hrs.] it was to go for a sail and that I'd be gone for a bit, she wasn't to impressed with my plan. So, maybe next time down I'll be able to take you up on that offer and also test out your A/C system. Hope it's working fine for you.
We won't do Orlando again as they've all had enough of it now. So, in the future we'll probably hit the gulf coast somewhere and maybe be a little closer to you.
Cheers-Larry Bayer
Thanks the update---hope your visit to Disney was enjoyable. Of course I'm still working on the A/C unit---but I'll get it done this week end-----SURE!!!!!Dave Tinder
