Mark V Bulkhead Replacement

I am currently looking at buying a Mark V and one of the issues with the boat is the condition of the bulkheads in the main cabin. The forward bulkhead seperating the V birth from the head in pretty poor along the bottom 6", it has seen a lot of water damage and is now quite rotten. The bulkhead seperating the head from the maion cabin is still intact but it also has had a lot of water damage is is very discolored along the bottom edge and is very soft.
Both bulkheads will have to be replaced (unless someone knows of a suitable repair). Has anyone done this job and if so what's involved and are there any tips or tricks or suggestions you can pass along.
Hopefull soon to be a 27 owner.

Re: Mark V Bulkhead Replacement

I've never had to attempt such a repair.  However, it sounds to me like a major structural issue.  If you are seriously interested in this boat, I recommend getting an accredited surveyor to inspect the boat throughout.  It's likely that the neglect that would lead to rotten bulkheads would also cause other problems.  Then, get a repair cost estimate from a credible boat yard, and make sure the purchase price is reduced correspondingly.

Re: Mark V Bulkhead Replacement

Your problem with bulkheads sounds familiar. I purchased a 1985 Mark V with a similar problem. No water damage but the bulkheads were 1/4 " tooshort when installed at the factory. C&C confirmed this in writing and offered to repair it if the owner had the vessel shipped back to Toronto for the repairs. He declined. I have experienced deck cracking around the mast and have been diligent in keeping it sealed from the weather. However, the provious owner allowed some damage to occur. The survey revealed minimal delamination and assured a sound deck. You may have one of the short bulkheads as well and thus major deck damage. Check out the source of the water which caused the damage first.
