Is it possible to find out the ownership history of your boat? I have tried unsuccessfully to obtain this information from Canada Customs for my boat. The officials say that the names of the previous owners are protected under the Canadian Privacy Act. Is there another source of this information? Is this different in the U.S.?
I asked a car dealer friend about his situation now that we have the aforementioned privacy laws.
He replied, "Funny thing is I don't even have to go to the Ministry as a Dealer, I can
just run the serial number through the Used Car Dealer Association web site
and it will give me the name, phone number and address of all the previous
owners, so the privacy law does not affect with cars and trucks."
Curious. I wonder if this is a case of over-zealousness on the part of the Customs officials (another golden opportunity to say 'no' to people). As I mentioned, one of the stated purposes of licensing and documentation has always been to prove ownership, but that function simply goes out the window if you can't verify it. Imagine buying a house without the opportunity to search title.

I contacted South Shore Yachts about this with my boat's registration number and hull number, and they replied, "Yes, we do have the original builder's files in stock. The price is $40.00 Canadian funds plus shipping and applicable taxes." So I sent them my credit card number and am waiting to see what I get. I thought all of C&C's original records were destroyed in the big fire that destroyed their factory in Niagra on the Lake.
I'd be interested in what's in the file (generally) you have ordered from SSY. I know who the previous two owners of my Mark III are but can't find the original. Cheers.

If you have success in tracking down your boat's information through South Shore and are satisfied with their response, please let me the forum know, as it would be worth the expense to get good information. Thanks, Charlie Sheets, Sea Robin, MKII
