Repower

I am planning doing a refit on my my '71 Mk 1. The A4 is tired and unreliable, however the boat is tight and performs well otherwise. I am close to making a determination on going with a Beta 14, which is a Kubota based engine advertised as an easy A4 replacement. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Windhorse has a Yanmar 2GM and a brief look at the numbers puts the Beta 14 in the same range. With the right prop it should push the boat well in most conditions. Keep in mind that almost everything changes with a switch to diesel including, prop, fuel lines, controls, etc. Check your fuel tank while the motor is out and see if it needs to be replaced or just scrubbed. The engine beds will likely have to be modified. Doing it yourself?

Greg, it may help if you go to "Black Arts" and see " New engine for Redeemed", which includes the engine you are dreaming about. Redeemed is a Mk V and he replaced a one-lung Yanmar, but it is a wonderful and illustrated article that could help you with your decision.

Modification of the engine beds is less serious than it sounds (if required - there seems to be a continuum of fiddling involved in the term "drop-in") as the 27's engine beds are steel L-angles bolted to the glass - or at least mine were. Swapping in new steel covers most of the old/new accommodation issues.

My new engine also required a new fuel filter and (surprise) a larger diameter exhaust line. On the strong recommendation of the head mechanic, the hose was routed up under the transom with a siphon break at the top of the line.
