Both sails on our new to us C&C 27 are numbered 24068. PO's agree the sails were made for the boat within the past few years, but cannot recall where the numbers came from. Hull number is 402. I checked with the two different sail makers but they have no idea. Any thoughts? Thanks.

That's most likely your PHRF assigned number to race the boat in a non one design PHRF class. Go on line for the area that the PO lived and sailed in and there should be a web site with the number designations in it.

This number is surely not your PHRF rating. I believe that the numbers were assigned by the manufacturer when they sold the boats to their first owners. I previously had a MK 2 with the number 24054 and 2 friend have Mk 2 with the numbers 24109 and 24156. Mk 3 boats has numbers starting with 34xxx, 44xxx and 54xxx, while Mk 4 with numbers starting with 64xxx and 74xxx. Many sailors change their sail numbers to correspond to their boats' serial number. You can do that if you so wish.

I don't think Martin Jubenvile was suggesting that the number on the sail is a rating. He was suggesting that it is a PHRF-assigned identification number. This is partly right. It is an identification number, but if it's a recognized number, it comes from the national authority (in our case, the Cdn Yachting Association and for US members, US Sailing). They are assigned sequentially (unless you want to pay for a "vanity number") which explains the congruence between the age of the boat and the numbers. See this CYA page on Offshore Sail Numbers.

Yep, David is correct. I should know as I'm in the process of getting my PHRF rating and a number assigned right now. I was told that a tentative rating would be in the 192 area with 9 seconds a mile for a non folding prop. That cracked me up and made the C fleet crap their collective drawers. I can't wait for next season.

[On Lake Ontario (which is just south of Bloor & Yonge and thus must be considered adjacent to the centre of the universe), a Mk III/IV rates 189. No idea what the discount for a solid prop is. - Admin]
