Pedestal Steering

We've owned our Mark IV for about 5 years now and done no maintenance on the pedestal steering (it's an Edson Peidestal). Can anyone comment on what the suggested maintenance might be. i.e. should we be replacing the wires, lubricating it (it seems well greased right now), etc. Also, apart from the original C&C Manual which has about a paragraph of info on the steering we have no manual. Any suggests where one could find info on how to maintain/service the steering.

THanks

Re: Pedestal Steering

It sounds as if you're doing the right things, but you might find useful suggestions on maintenance on the Edson Marine site - they were C&C's main supplier. I wouldn't replace anything that isn't visibly deficient. The wire is the obvious wear item, so I'd run a cloth along it to locate frayed strands. If you don't find any, leave it alone other than light re-greasing.

In my own experience, I found that the worst thing one can do is allow the cables to become loose; they will then jump the sheaves, leaving you with no steering at the worst possible moment.

Re: Pedestal Steering

The Edson website has great downloadable manuals and maintenance guides. http://www.edsonmarine.com/

Re: Pedestal Steering

I have an Edson pedestal on my Mk1. One issue I've had with it in almost 4 years of ownership is that somewhere in the system there's a very slight gronking noise (maybe around the shaft or in the cockpit floor) when I'm in waves and not necessarily even in much wind. It sometimes occurs just when slopping in powerboat wake. I've crawled around underneath to see if anything's amiss, even had a swim with mask and given the rudder a good shake and push, but I can't detect any untoward movement. I was sailing with Bill Goman (ex-C&C and Goman/Express Yachts) the other day and he suggested maybe I want to drop the rudder in the off season and have a good look. I don't know if anyone else with an Edson and a vintage scimitar rudder ever hears noises.Doug Hunter

Re: Pedestal Steering

Hey Doug,

Have you already tried getting more grease onto the rudder post? There should be a grease packing cup on the side of the tube housing the rudder post, under the cockpit sole. Certainly the later Marks had them, mine is on the starboard side of the tube. I make sure that the cup is filled with grease every spring and then screw it down well to force grease into the post tube and all around the rudder post. This also helps to block water from coming up around the rudder post when we are sailing in a chop. It might be worth dropping the rudder this winter, cleaning both the post and the tube and then giving it a really good coating of grease upon reinstallation. Just don't get grease where the steering quadrant clamps on, you really don't want that to start slipping.

Re: Pedestal Steering

Thanks Marcus. I do have a grease cup and it seemed to pretty loaded, but I haven't topped it up. It makes sense as you say to drop the thing this fall, give it a cleaning, and reload the grease cup.
