winch drum

my mark v has barient 18, 2 speed winches for the jib (not self-tailing). The drums are pretty smooth. Yesterday I was sailing with friends on their newish catalina 34 and its winch drums were quite roughed ( some chrome-plating process). Now I wonder if my barients used to be rough and have now worn smooth since 1985 ( I bought the boat last year). Is there a re-surfacing process for these drums?

Re: winch drum

I too have a Mark V that had Barrient 2-speed winches.  I replaced them with self-tailer winches.  I do believe that use smoothed down the rough drums. I understand the drums can be "roughed up".  In the meantime, you can wet the sheets and they will hold around the drums.
