Pre-purchase questions

Hi,
I'm a newbie to the board and looking at a 1985 C&C 27, (MkIII??), and have some questions maybe you can help me with. Did some searching and found reference to the ports(windows) being structural and prone to leak, the boat I'm looking at does have this problem is it easily fixed by a handy DIY'er? Next, the boat has a yanmar diesel, unknown at this time which model, I will have to go look but has not started in three years the yard owner says he will "resurrect it" for $159.00, again is this something as routine as flushing the fuel and do some light maintenance on other fluids? Can't imagine him doing much for that price. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.
If all goes well I will be a regular on board the forum and intro myself when new owner.   Thanks

Re: Pre-purchase questions

Well more careful reading and I found the article on replacing the windows so that kinda answered one big question.

I'd make this a core element of the sales negotiation (ignore the $159.00 offer). Either the current owner gets the diesel running to the satisfaction of your independently hired mechanic before the sale or the replacement value of a new engine goes into escrow in case the current one proves not to be revivable.

Otherwise you could be in for an expensive surprise.

Re: Pre-purchase questions

if this boat is a 85, then I think it is a MK V, as this is what I have. Yes you would be able to do rhe windows yourself. cut as for the diesel,  I would get a pro to look at it first.

Re: Pre-purchase questions

also look for
moisture in the deck around the mast, the base of the baby stay, and the fittings for the mast wiring where it comes through the deck.  none of that is fatal, but if it's wet it will have to be fixed.
and get a mechanic to check that diesel!  (it will be a Yanmar 1GM or 2GM)
