This my be a silly question, but why, do you need to get new geugeons and pintles? Is it because of wear or did they fail. If it's wear you can likely have them machined. I just had the ones on my 85 Mark V done this winter, cost me $160.00 CDN and the rudder is nice and tight now. The machienist made new pintles to match the geugeons after the geugeons were machined out to a true bore hole. Again if it because of wear the holes become elongated, the pins wear very little as they are stainless the casting that they go in is bronze and thats what wears.

Prior to my purchasing the boat it had been keep on a lake mooring when not in use. The rudder/tiller was secured but the method used allowed excessive movement of the rudder/tiller and over the years this eventually caused wear. I would doubt that "sailing" the boat would have caused wear to this extent. I do intend to look for a machinist's solution to the problem if original replacement cost or lack of available parts makes it necessary. Thanks for the comment. I have sent pictures and requests to South Shore Yachts via US Mail...Ciao..Lou Potente, Willsboro, NY ljpotente@yahoo.com

In the advice for worn gudgeons one of the solutions for fixing the problem was to sleeve your existing gudgeon and re-bore the hole. I would be interested in knowing who does this kind of work.

Bob & Loupo:
The gudgeons are made of cast bronze, chrome plated, the pintals are made of stainless steel. The stainless being much harder, causes the bronze to wear. The wear is usually not circular, but oval (egg shape) and usually wears more on the top or bottom of the vertical hole in each gudgeon. On my boat there was a lot of annoying slop in the rudder, I like it tight. So I removed the gudgeons, marked what was top on each one, also removed the gudgeons from the rudder, again marked what was top and which one was the top one. Gave the whole shooting match to a machinist who set them up on a true table and checked the alignment. We were able to over boar the gudgeons just enough to make the holes true and circular. Then he machined new pins to the correct size for the gudgeons. In fact the new pins are matched one for the upper set of gudgeons and one for the lower, the pins also have a step in them. By that I mean that the diameter of the upper part of the pin is slightly larger than the bottom diameter. The boat has a much nicer feel to it now, especially in light air when the constant slopping of the rudder used to drive me crazy.

Thanks for the info and background guys....Last spring I pulled the pins and took the rudder to a local machinist. I also measured the pintel and guedugon holes. They were slightly enlarged and out of round just a bit. The machinist made me two replacement pins about 1mm larger in diameter. They fit snugly and now no more free play. Last season worked out well and I expect that the modification will last for as long as I have the boat. Its importatnt to limit movement of the rudder while the boat is moored or in a berth. That's where most of the wear occurs....Ciao...Loupo SV August Willsboro, NY
