my signet mk172 on the bulkhead with a dia. of about 4" is toast...
The replacement signet is around $380.
All others I find are 2 1/4 dia. dash mount and around $160.
Can anyone suggest a replacement so as to not have to modify the
bulkhead and alittle more reasonable

You might want to consider having a couple of rounds of white quarter-inch ABS cut with a diameter about one inch larger than the diameter of your current mounting hole and with holes centred for the new display (you wind up with a doughnut-shapes). With one doughnut against on the outside gelcoal and one on the inside liner, drill four or six appropriately-spaced holes for aluminum Chicago bolts, which make for a nice clean appearance and are available at Home Hardware. Caulk and proceed with mounting of the new display.

Try the Navman units. They are 4" (approx) square and will cover the 4" hole with a little filing. The local store didn't have a knotmeter last spring when I tried to get a replacement, so they sold me a fishfinder (Navman) which has a knotmeter function at a big discount. Fortunately, it also has a depthfinder function, because my depthfinder packed up just as soon as I put the fishfinder in. Now I have both functions in one instrument for the same price as the knotmeter, and am making a wooden cover plate for the other hole. Mon Amour is ashore
NAVMAN has a (relatively new)line of instruments which are 4" square. I replaced a knotmeter last year with a NAVMAN (fishfinder, but that's a long story). I had to file out the hole a bit, but it's all filled up, and the ff has a knotmeter function. It also has a depthfinder function, which is handy since my df failed shortly after I installed it. The single instruments are a bit over $200.

I had the same situation. The solution my engineering friend came up with was brilliant.
We bought a piece of teak approx 1" in depth; we cut it to 4"x4" and then placed it on a lathe.
On the lathe we sculpted the teak into a round plug for the 4" hole in the bulkhead, but with an approximate 1" lip on the inside. When we placed the plug into the bulkhead from the inside, the exterior of the bulkhead was flush and secured by the 1" lip on the inside.
I use Navman and Standard Horizon instruments; they require a 2" hole. After dry mounting, drill a 2" hole with a hole saw in the centre of the plug.
Run a bead of your favourite sealent (siccaflex or 4200 etc)around the lip of the plug and insert into the bulkhead from the inside. Take your instrument panel and insert the wires into the 2" hole from outside the bulkhead into the interior. Place the locking nut for the instrument onto the instrument and tighten. This will compress the instrument onto the bulkead and correspondingly tighten plug into the bulkhead.
From the exterior, the panels hide the teak and on the interior the teak plugs are a highlight or selling feature depending upon your your spouse's point of view at the time. I have pics if you want them.
