Replace the engine with a 3YM20

hello
is it possible to fit a 3YM20 Yanmar in a C&C Mark 111 1980?

Roger, Please don't apologise for your English, it is much better than my French.
Is the 3YM20 an engine you already have?  Or is it just a consideration.

Hello Ralph.
We considere seriusly to change our YSM12 before leaving for the Bahamas nex year. We planed to do this modification as soon as the wether will be enought confortable.  I already have a quote for this new engine model.Knowing that they don't produce the 2GM20 anymore i prefer to install the new model if it's possible. We realy appreciate our C&C 27 and think it's big enough to do this trip.

Roger,
Looking at the dimensions it should fit. I'm using a 2GMF18 (13HP) and with the right prop it is more than enough power for the boat. The new 2YM should work as well.
Please keep us informed of your travels. I'm planning a Bahamas trip in 2008 / 2009.

Roger,  I'm a little confused.  Is it a 3 cylinder  or 2 cylinder you are looking at??

Thank's for the interest.
Yanmar told me that the 2GM20 was replaced by the 3YM20 wich is a 3 cylinder.  Due to the vibration of theses 2 cylinders engines l'am  propose to install a 3 cylinder. Also we sail in the St. Laurent river with tide and current and plan to go in the Bahamas new year.

Roger, I would only be concerned with the dimensions of the engine. If  the dimensions are close to the 2GM20 you will have no problem with the installation.

theses are the dimensions:
wide: 18.2 inch, long:27.3 inch, high: 23.6 inch. and the dry weight is:266 lbs.
Do you think it's a good idee to install a 3 cylinder?

Roger, If the engine room on your boat is the same as a Mk 1, I think you would have a problem with the length of the engine. If you look in Black Arts under "Hyperion's New Engine" you will note how close the front of the engine is to the stairs into the cabin, and it is 22" long. Also, The extra inch of height may be close to the cockpit floor. I'm not saying it won't fit, but I would measure very carefully before spending that much money on an engine.

En 2005, nous avons fait installer un Yanmar 2YM15 sans difficulté. Vous pouvez le voir à la même page de la section <<Black Arts>> que Hyperion, au fond de la page. Je viens de comparer les dimensions du 2YM15 et le 3YM20 et je crois que les dimensions critiques se resemblent, sauf que le longueur et le poids du 3YM20 sont un peu plus grands.

Je comprends que les courants et les marées du St Laurent necessaient un réserve de puissance mais - a mon avis - vous constaterez qu'un 2YM15 vous suffira. Nous n'avons pas des courants pareilles, mais je n'ai jamais avancé la commande de puissance au delà de 60%.

J'espère que ceci vous aide à arriver à une bonne décision.

Merci pour les commentaires et les liens, j'apprécie grandement.
Les deux raisons qui m'incitent a changer mon moteur pour un moteur de plus grosse cylindré sont: premièrement le fait nous prévoyons un voyage au Bahamas l'an prochain et mon Yanmar YSM12 serait beaucoup trop bruyant et vibreux pour les 400 heures que nous devons prévoir a moteur pour nous rendre.
Deuxièmement les fabriquants de moteurs ne semble plus fabriquer de moteurs 2 cylindres a cause des nouvelles lois sur la pollution, ce qui nous oublige a condidérer l'installation d'un moteur 3 cylindres. Chose qui toutefois aurait l'avantage de réduire considérablement le bruit et surtout la vibration. J'hisite maintenant entre un Yanmar et un Volvo Penta. Si je me fie aux spécifications et aux commentaires écrit dans le dépliant du Volvo ce moteur me semble beaucoup plus silencieus et moin vibreux ?

Hier j'ai demandé au chef des mécaniciens du club comment décider entre le Volvo et le Yanmar. Parlant surtout de leur moteurs de 3 cylindres, il m'a assuré que le Yanmar est plus silencieux mais le Volvo est moins vibreux. La différence entre les deux, de meme que la différence entre leur moteurs de 3 et de 2 cylindres, ne signfit qu'un peu.

Mon nouveau Yanmar 2YM15, modèle tout neuf l'année dernière, a 2 cylindres. Nous le trouvons plus bruyant et vibreux que notre ancien Atomic 4, mais a l'addition de materiaux d'amélioration de bruit (je ne connais pas le mot juste pour céla - acheté à Genco à Toronto - espèce de mousse assez lourde, couverte de papier de aluminium), nous nous habituons au bruit qui reste.
