sails part two

In reading the question about sail repair it reminded me that I may need a new main. Has anyone ever "mail ordered" a sail from one of those advertisers in magazines, and ordered one using the measurements from the association's specifications? I am moving my boat from an area that has one or two sail lofts to an area that has none, and am considering ordering from a "reputable" sail manufacturer. My MKII is standard, nothing has ever been done that would lead me to believe my mast or boom is different than the day she was launched. Any thoughts on the matter?

Re: sails part two

The boat next to mine is a MK III and he recently mail ordered a mainsail but it has not arrived yet.He took the risk based on a frined who had been happy with his catalog purchase. He mentioned that, including freight, the sail was about half the price of the local lofts and that the manufacturer makes the cruising sail line for one of the major sailmakers. I forget which one. When his sail comes in and he has had a chance to try it out I'll post his comments.

Re: sails part two

I purchased my MKIII with no sails, so had to purchase everything. I figured I would try three different ways to purchase my sails.
1. I had a local sailmaker (Quantum) come measure to ensure that mine was the same as on the web page here - it was. I purchased my main sail through them.
2. I found a used jib on e-bay for $200, and figured if it doesn't work at least I can turn around and sell it on e-bay again. It fits great, works great.
3. I found a company (add on e-bay) that makes them and ordered a 153 Genoa for $810 (I think that included shipping - but I was only a couple states over, and told him he had time to get it to me). It works great, with the only problem being that the last two turns on the furler, the suncover starts showing a little sail. Something I can live with to save $800 to $1000. His address is dave_benjamin at yahoo.com (you all know what I'm doing with the at). He indicated that he would appreciate referalls, so I put it in.
I had done the measurements myself, but just was not ready to drop more than $2,000 on a web page and my scant knowledge and tape measure. At this point though I would - the web page was spot on and my tape proved it.

Re: sails part two

I have no input on your buying a new sail but am interested in your used main if you are willing to sell it. If it will fit my mk1 i and is still useable, i may be interested in purchasing it.
Thanks,

Re: sails part two

I purchased a mainsail on Ebay for $250.00 and it fit my Wave 26 like a glove, and it was almost new. I know, I was lucky. You might want to try Bacon & Associates in Maryland for used sails http://www.baconsails.com/
