We have wheel steering on our boat (purchased spring 04) and after purchasing we routinely removed the wheel without too much difficulty to give us more room while anchored. Towards the end of summer the wheel removal became more diffult and this spring it took me an hour to get the thing off. I then cleaned the shaft and the wheel and slid it back on (over white grease) but it's still not easy to remove. My questions: What's the best lubricant (if any) to use to allow the wheel to slide off easier? ....and Any suggestions on what may have caused this sudden seaze up to begin with?
