New Cutlass Bearing increases boat speed under power

I just replaced the cutlass bearing on my C&C 27 MKV, the boat does an amazing 3/4 - 1 knot better under power. (Now up to about 6.2 knots)  I had originally thought my 14RH10 gori prop was too large and slowing the engine too much, but after replacing my cutlass bearing, the engine runs smoother and gets up to 3000 RPM, before it would only go up to about 2600 RPM. I was not expecting such an improvement but it made that much of a difference. Cost was $275 including all labour.

Re: New Cutlass Bearing increases boat speed under power

Was the prop shaft really loose in the old bearing or had something gotten into the bearing to bind the shaft?

Re: New Cutlass Bearing increases boat speed under power

I dont know if something had gotten in the bearing, I doubt it, I did notice some zebra mussels (which I removed and vc 17d the area) at the hull when the shaft was taken out perhaps they where rubbing.  In any event the boat does not shake nearly as much and engine seems to run smoother and definately faster. Just thought I'de let others know incase they encounter similair engine rpm and boat speed issues.
