With the help of this list I have managed to remove the holding tank from my '76 Mk III. The problem I discovered, was that the pump out tube was broken off just inside the top of the tank. This meant that the tank (although pumped out regularly) was actually about 80% full, and had been for some years. I strongly believe this to be the source of our odours. I have cleaned the tank, leak tested it, and replaced all the fittings. My last issue is the pump out tube. Originally it was a flexible hose glued to the underside of the through tank fitting. The flex hose allowed it to follow the curve of the tank side and reach the bottom. This means it has to pass through a 1.72" dia. hole (the ID of the threads for the fitting) I can't seem to find flexible hose that has 1.5" ID and 1.72" or less OD. Any suggestions?
Hi Chris,
Been there done that so to speak. I used some suction hose made for swiming pools. So far it's lasted one season, I'm hoping for many more :-) Really any stiff hose that won't collapse under suction will work. My test was a shop vac attached to the hose trying to lift water about 4 feet (1.2 meters?) The hose was blue and white and I found it at lumber supply store if that helps. I did cut a few notches on the bottom to prevent it from sucking tight to the bottom.
