Hi guys, I'm looking for some help. I want to put a back stay adjuster on my Mk V. I had a guy from Hall Spars Rigging come out to look at the boat, but he wanted to remove the turnbuckles from the back stay and replace with blocks. I'm not comfortable with that approach because if the block fails, the rig is coming down.
I saw the photo of Heatwave, is that how most of you have your back stay adjusters set up? I can certainly put in some "U" bolts if that works best. What are some of you racers using? How much of a purchase do you have? And last, but not least, anyone have any photos they are willing to share?
TIA

I put a backstay adjuster on my boat last year. I put a large seadog u-bolt (with a stainless steel top and backing) off of the stern about 6"-8" away from starboard stern cleat, I went to the local hardware store and had them cut the u-bolt to size (so it doesnt stick out much, otherwise I don't think you will get it to fit, leave about 1/4 inch after nut is tight). Marked the piece first then drill. I upgraded my main sheet to 6:1 and used old 4:1 as the adjuster. (I added snap shackles to 4:1)
My system uses two sheaves/blocks made for wire, one for each side of the split backstay, the sheaves are attached to a ring, the ring attaches to the 4:1 fiddle blocks with the camcleat at bottom, bottom is attached to U bolt.
Some boats have placed a U-bolt on either side which I plan to do if I keep the boat. They add a third wire block/sheave and use a wire from the one u-bolt up to the sheave and to the 4:1 purchase. This increases the purchase and seems to operate smoother than mine.
