Hi
I was out on the weekend and when motoring back into the marina my atomic four jumped out of gear a couple of times, also reverse doesn;t seem to be fully engaging. After surfing a bit I understand that you have to adjust the clutch every once and a while. Is it easy, can anyone help.

Hi,
Had the same problem about 7 years ago and as I recall, once I got the book out and saw what had to be done, the most difficult part was getting into a comfortable position inside the locker to be able to physically do it. Also, a magnifying mirror (like you use for shaving or applying make-up) will help you to see down into the tranny because you don't have room to get your head into position directly over top of it. Hang/wedge/tape the mirror in place so you can use both hands on the tools.
I don't know if I could manage to adjust my clutch today--- My lockers must have gotten water into them and they've shrunk considerably since I last had to spend time in there!

I know what you mean about those Lazeretts shrinking---I've held up these lids for 45 years with bungee cords---spare pieces of line---wrenches----screw drivers----winch handles----etc---etc. Has anybody instaslled those fancy spring hatch levers ( for lack if a better word) to keep these things open----my wife would appreciate knowing about them--and how they work---Best,Dave Tinder

Hi Dave and others,
I found some "friction slides" at a place here in Canada called Lee Valley Tools --but I'm sure you could find them elsewhere at any well-stocked supply shop for woodworking and cabinetry. These slides have a "detent" formed in the brass slide rod and this detent clicks fairly firmly into a stationery nylon bar so the device holds the lid up quite well. My Mk 111 has a teak board running round the interior lip of the locker so the stationery part of the slides mounted there easily. I epoxied a piece of wood to the underside of each locker lid at the appropriate spot and mounted the ends of the slide rods to these blocks with brass screws.
