The summer sun in SW Fl is absolutely brutal---and my years of "going fast" are over. At this point in my life I try to keep the wind at my backside and the Heineken as cold as possible---I don't recall ever being passed by a boat with a bimini flying----but my time has come. Has anyone installed a bimini with any degree of success? I know there are lots of trade offs---but I need to limit my trips to the dermatologist.

Hi Dave,
Having just come in from shovelling our driveway, I'm having just a little bit of trouble summoning some pity for your skin being toasted as you sail in the Fla. sun BUT I'll try to help you in your quest for a bimini. If you look at the picture of our boat in "The Fleet" you'll see the bimini I designed and had built.
I'm not quite ready yet to give up on "trying to go fast" so I designed this bimini to fasten to our stern rail with 2 quick-pull pins and because the front bow of the bimini is built to open up in the center , the bimini can come off the boat in about 3 minutes for racing (behind/around our single backstay) and it goes back on for cruising just as fast.
I also had some zippers put in the upper edges-- 2 across the back and one on each side. The other halves of these zippers are on 4 Sunbrella panels that we can zip on to edges of the bimini (usually when at anchor or docked) to block the wind , or the sun-- if the sun is low in the sky. If you click on the picture of Aragorn and enlarge it , you'll see one of those panels zipped onto the starboard side of the bimini while sailing under spinnaker.

I am in the same latitude - or close: Galveston Bay Texas. My challenge is the end-boom sheeting. I plan to go to the "Two mainsheet" system on the cabin top - to allow a full cockpit bimini. I am considering a mod like my neighbor in a Mk V, she raised her boom 12" to make more room for a bimini without the issue of bimini/boom contact. Hey, when you turn 60 - today for me - comfort means a lot!
